Where are save points in open world?

Before this point the game seems to space save points at a good rate, but there don't seem to be any in the open world and even though the game says it auto saves, it doesn't seem to (much).

Also i realize there must be save points, but it doesn't seem like they are marked on the map, they aren't in obvious looking buildings and they aren't common.

The game does a good job at telling you what to do before this point but then it just drops you out where with no idea what you're supposed to do.

they are almost everywhere, these are mushroom houses with a red roof

Yes as he the bunkers are everywhere you just have to look for them ( red roof , gray concrete structure)
