American accents?
Just started and I'm finding the world really interesting. However I find the American accents really jarring in what is (I assume) supposed to be Russia. Is there a lore explanation for this or did they just hire American voice actors and didn't ask them to use Russian accents?

Probably because the American accent is simply more popular.
What they should have done is got Russian actors to speak in american accents:steammocking:

Prolly better this way, since well... If they tried faking a russian accent theres be far more complaints. You can just play the game in russian if you want it to not be jarring. Cuz what is more jarring than an accent is how in english no one speaks the countries native language.

shouldve just had the american actors do a fake russian accent, like in metro. sounds way better than straight-up burgerspeak

How often do you see a film where Russians speak with American accents?

I'm amazed that a few people seem to think this is such an odd expectation. Actors mimicking different country's accents is pretty much par for the course in films.
Not even the npcs and main character look Russian

I think looking different could be excused due to the alternative timeline, but the voice work is just odd. I was genuinely wondering if the USSR had conquered the USA and everyone was supposed to be a former US citizen.

Dubs usually don't put on a fake accent of the language that they're translating from. I haven't heard the English voice work, but I'm glad to hear that they didn't go for the typical racist caricature that English voice overs usually go for.

If you have a problem with me calling it racist, imagine if every English dub of a Japanese anime had an offensive fake "asian" accent.

On the other hand, American's doing English accents generally have one of two accent. Is that also racist?

Me: Play the game in official Russian Language of the Gods, and move on with subtitles.

I'm not sure what you meant to say. The English language has many accents from many different cultures, a lot more than two. An actor accurately playing a role of somebody from a different culture isn't racist in itself. The difference is that the characters in this game don't speak English.

You have to suspend your disbelief if you choose to watch / play a dubbed work.

In fact, there is a German character in the game, who is voiced by a Russian actor who puts on a fake German accent. I wouldn't say that's any more racist than Michael Hollick voicing Niko Bellic with a Serbian accent.

You claim that actor doing foreign accents is racist as they tend to be caricatures. I’m pointing out that Americans tend to do caricatures of English accents (and call it British), and asking is you consider that to be racist as well.
