F-45A HMD works with visor up

Hopped into the F-45A today and found that the HMD overlay was working even with the helmet visor up. Usually fly the F/A-26B so could just be a plane feature I'm misunderstanding.

It is a feature.
It uses a different helmet, and its visor only serves as a sun shade.

Ah ok, I did wonder if it was something like that. So (purely to sate my own interest) how does it canonically project the hud into your eyes? Does the helmet just have a permanent clear shield that is always deployed over the eyes?
