Help me notch, I'm very bad!
Either that or notching is really REALLY tricky, but here's what I do.

- As soon as I see a missile or missile warning, I dive so I'm lower than it so it can see terrain behind me.

- Then I turn and put it on my left or right wing tip so I'm travelling at a 90 degree angle to the left or right of it.

- Near the end of my turn I dump a big blob of chaff and flares so it has something else to look at while I keep it off my wing tip.

- The missile maintains a steady lock, not getting notched.

- As the missile is closing in, I dump one more blob of chaff and flares then, at the last moment, attempt to pull up and roll over or under it while dumping chaff and flares.

- The missile hits my cockpit and I die.

What am I doing wrong here? At no point does the missile ever lose tracking, but I'm pretty sure I went through all the steps for notching.

Notching in itself has no need for chaff cms, although it can still be used to assist in breaking lock. Notching works best at med to long range, once target closes enough distance notching becomes ineffective. There are specific maneuvers to perform while using chaff. Here are some video resources that may help. Best of luck, it takes practice so dont be too hard on yourself.

There are a few factors you need to consider when you are being locked up before being fired upon to evade.

1. is speed, speed is life when it comes to evading radar and IR missiles, the faster you are the higher your chances are to Jink.

2. Distance from enemy, the further they are the better your chances.

3. enemy position, are they high or are they low. If they are high, drop you nose and dive for the deck, if they are low, you will need to turn 180, go cold and outrun.

Now they fired a radar missile.

To notch, you need to factor in enemy position, increase your speed, and then angle off the enemy by 45 to 75 degrees, never angle by 90, it won't help you.

once you are in a notch and diving, start making a controlled turn into the enemy to keep them at the notch angle, the tighter you can keep that angle the more energy the missile loses.

If the missile is closing in to terminal range ( 5 miles ) Tighten your turn to the limits of the air-frame and dump chaff.

Now for IR missile,

Similar to above but you cannot use afterburner once it gets within 6 miles, drop flares, turn into it hard.

if it's at your rear, split S if you have the altitude, or break turn last second while dumping flares.

Now if the enemy is on the deck and fires while you are high.

perform a long Split S to dive to the deck, run, and once the missile is within 5 miles, dump countermeasures and turn tight to evade then require the bandit.

To properly notch and be filtered out by the doppler radar you must have ground returns behind you. If you are notching and at a similar or higher altitude to your opponent you would be beaming. Beaming is still helpful since it kinematically defeats the missile but it does not defeat the radar like notching.

I already covered that in my post
