VTOL VR

VTOL VR

What NEXT? (after the Mischief)
Game has currently a really good selection of planes, another bird could only be a re-implementation of some of the existing roles (yes, A10 can be roleplayed with the AV42c) and no matter how much I'd love a new helicopter, it will be a variant of the AV42c roles or a variant of the AH94 roles...

So, my point is, WHAT WILL BE NEXT?

My bet goes for a "DUNGEON MASTER ROLE" that is a misson controller who can add objectives, targets, enemies and so in realtime, much like it can be done in DCS. That really makes sense for me. This can create dynamic situtaions always on the verge of disaster for the players, could be used for true ATC/AWACS roles and many other things that creative people could come with.

Other alternatives could be different approaches for the game. I really think a WW2 set of planes and missions can work in VTOL VR, but for that IL2 works pretty well in VR. Having more vehicles is redundant some how... except if they focus solely in PVP game. New technologies and loadouts could go for DRONE controlling systems (both for AA and AG), and being able to control land units has not much sense (and ground units are really buggy depending on the terrain to be playable).

So, there goes my thoughts.

For mission control and drone operations, you could play Carrier Commander 2 instead.
It also supports VR and multiplayer.

For World War II aircraft, you could play Warplanes instead, which also supports motion controllers as flight controls.

@醉仙望月 yes and no, Carrier Command 2 is a nice game, but it's clear that it is not created from top to bottom thinking only in VR playing, and the idea is NOT to play a Commander game, but to be able to create a dynamic, everchanging scenario for a group of players, having fun doing it. It's more a Game Master mode than a player against AI commander mode. Something similar to what DCS has.

About WWII, Warplanes is arcade crap, IL2 is amazing both for WWI and WWII, but agin it's clear that VR is an add on and the game is not created thinking solely in VR. VTOL VR WWII is something that obviously BAHA is not going to do, but the VR roots of VTOL VR could work pretty well almost in any kind of simulator (name it WWII, Mechas, Spaceships or submarines) because the VR implementation is amazingly clean and friendly... and release after release, game mechanics and simulation has become top notch!

Maybe we should accept that VTOL VR is not supposed to be a jack-of-all-trades kind of game.
Years ago, when the dev got an HTC Vive, he was impressed by how accurately the controllers were being tracked and wanted to see if he could use them as flight controls in a virtual cockpit. Since he was prototyping a vehicle in a very small environment, it had to be a VTOL to prevent it from moving too fast and going off the bounds of the world. It was working so well so he built the rest of the game around that.
The plan was originally to fly around (vertical thrust only) a small procedural city completing short strike and transport missions, but then he made the engines able to tilt, so the map had to be bigger, then he wanted to do hook and catapult, so ok now we need a big ocean, so now the city seems like a dumb flat island, so we need terrain, now the terrain island is getting boring so we need procedural maps, etc. With the support of the wonderful community that has grown around it, the game has totally exceeded what it had initially envisioned.
I'm as excited as you are to see how far this game has come, and wonder where it will go in the future.

Is it possible to mark enemy's for wing men because If so a new hard point attachment could serve the roll in telling your friends what to do

you can send GPS wave points to your friends. I was playing a mission and I was flying the helicopter and I found some bunkers which I did not have the weapons for. So I marked them with GPS wave points than my buddies dropped bombs on them for me.

Something I'd love to see in vtol vr is an ASW (anti-submarine warfare) update. It could be a combined update/dlc, adding ai submarine units, new weapons on ships and ground units for attacking submarines, a winch attachment for the AV42C, which can carry a dipping sonar, or possibly a rescue harness for SAR missions, a torpedo weapon for the kestrel, and maybe deployable sonar buoys aswell. It could also include another aircraft, possibly as a dlc, which is a maritime patrol aircraft like the nimrod, giving the player new sensors and weapons to mess around with, like magnetic sensors, sonar, torpedoes, depth charges, and maybe something like the hammerhead torpedo-mine. It might not be possible as it may require a complete rework of the way maps work in vtol vr, because I don't think it actually simulates 'depth', but hey it would still be cool as hell.

Thank you, this is an amazing story.
You are an amazing source of knowledge about the game.
I am very sorry that you are treated so badly on this forum. I think this is a huge injustice.

You do a great job of quoting the answers of the game developer, and telling the story of the game, and the reasons why something was done exactly the way it was.

Personally, I think that for the amount of work you put into it, you should be honorably placed in the credits in the thanks, or something similar.

For my part, I send you a heartfelt thank you for your contribution to the development of the game. You're doing a great job here, and you're taking a lot of hits, it must be a very unpleasant job.

Here are the major updates in the public_testing branch:
  • Weather & day/night cycle
The old OverCloud volumetric cloud plugin has been modified to support single pass stereo rendering for a significant performance boost.
Visibility affects the TGP and optical weapon guidance.
  • Buddy lasing
Laser-guided weapons can be guided by friendlies by entering laser codes.
  • A numpad in the cockpit
It can be used to enter radio channels, altitude on the map, and laser codes.
  • TOW optically tracked missiles
It can be launched from helicopters, APCs, and infantry.
  • New units
    Buddy lasing infantry
    TOW APCs
    Cargo Trucks

OH! that are HUGE improvements!!!

Lastly I went back to DCS and I'm pushing hard on helicopter warfare there... improving the laser operation, adding radio frequencies, laser codes, better weather... this game is slowly getting closer to DCS options XD
And TOWs can be really fun if you have to "fly them" somehow instead of using the most forgiving fire and forget air to ground missiles. And trucks!!! FINALLY!!! just that, some logistics to go boom!!!

Thank you very much for the info.

About Laser guided weapons and friendly lasing... VTOLVR has a lot of superpowered weapons that are fire&forget without lasing with huge ranges... having this mechanic is fun, going for more cold-war era or realistic set ups, which are great in VtolVR, but with the most "advanced" hardware in use, lasing is just a vintage option :D

I second this, an anti-submarine plane would be pretty cool
