BFM/Dogfighting Tutorials?
Hey all, was wondering if anyone had some good resources they could point me to?

I'm pretty confident with ground attack and BVR combat, but i'm pretty tragic as soon as it turns into guns and heaters fight. I see people using terms like one-circle and two-circle. I know you're meant to win the merge, but I don't actually know how!

Any help would be appreciated! :)

If an AIM-9 is going at you head on, you can actually lift up and flare, you want to up high and fast enough to go above the missile, but don't use too much engines or you'll get shot. Flares should be deployed when it's getting really close, but when a missile is right on you stop launching flares. They'll direct it towards you and it'll hit the flare you just released (basically hitting you with explosive damage). Most merges will just be missile launches in a guns n heaters match, so this'll help you at least go for the first pass on the enemy.

Oh awesome, thanks! I'm usually a bit too cautious when it comes to IR launches - I reckon flaring too late has killed me a few times. Any tips for dodging guns on that first pass? I normally try and roll away from them, but that normally just stops me from firing back.

If you can, shoot back. If not, fire a missile. It acts as a temporary stun; they have to dodge.

Now that I can use both hands, here's some better understanding:
If you are being fired upon at the moment and you are getting closer, immediately shoot a missile. This missile is for stun tactic only, the idea being they dodge it and you pass the merge. If you put missiles on head track mode, they fire based on where your head points. Uncage your missiles so they will immediately lock on to whatever you point at for instant fire. After this merge, you can turn around and start shooting again. If this same problem occurs, use the missiles, but only use one unless you plan on blowing them up with your missile. This wont happen, though, unless AIRS-T are involved (not in G&H).

Final note: Don't fire missiles quickly if you want to kill them. Make sure there's a good distance in between each missile in case one targets a flare, the second will keep good eye on the plane unless it flares again. This tactic is also not noticed that much.

I've created a guide that talks about evading IR missiles.

Thank you very much! That guide was really good - can't wait to test it out! :)

Here's a playlist of BFM lesson videos. The aircraft used are old ww2 planes but the same concepts apply to jets. Give these a watch, They helped me a lot to develop my BFM skills in Vtol VR.
