Chaff/Flares Useless?!

I must be doing something wrong... I can't avoid missiles... Flares and Chaff seem to be totally ineffective.

Anytime there's a missile in play it's basically an automatic game over and it's getting really frustrating. The only time I seem to survive is by pure luck. Maybe I only get one engine destroyed instead of two, or somehow it manages to miss me, but that's like a 1 in 10 chance, EVEN when I throttle down and pull some Gs.

Any idea what I might be doing wrong?
