VTOL VR

What are the best settings for maximum performance?
I have an I9-7900X running at a base speed of 3.31 GHz, with 64 GB memory running at 2934 MHz , a 2TB M2 SSD, and an overclocked 2080 it with 11 GB of memory. I am running the game through Steam VR with a valve Index.

I set the mirror screen to 640 * 480 windowed mode, and then I minimize it to not use waste any CPU time rendering to the computer monitor. I have the game's executable in the turbo-boost list. The CPU does turbo-boost at 4.3 while playing the game.

I cannot get this game to running acceptably unless I run the game at 80Hz and turn the screen resolution down to 100% for both the application and steam VR. I have motion smoothing and super sampling turned off. The problem with this configuration is that the screens is not as sharp as when I play the game at 90 Hz and bump up the resolution to 120% on the steam resolution property.

I have not touched the NVidia control panel yet.

According to the Steam VR performance test, my computer system is well above the specifications to play VR games.

Note that I can play Half-Life: Alyx with every setting turned up to high and I experience no stutter or jerkiness when moving.

So, am I am missing something? I am using the latest beta version because I experienced the same problems with the stable version.

What Nvidia settings are you using to get this game to run smoothly. Note that things get bad when I play a mission with many AI players.

I really like this game, but with the performance issues, it is getting almost unbearable to play this game.

There's nothing you can do except to wait for some engine optimisation that will come eventually.

Your kidding?

Nope, the game runs quite bad on heavy loaded missions and loaded carrier. If you have bad performance ALL the time, that's not normal tho. The game is running on Unity and developped by a single person, so don't expect miracle performance boost in the future.

You can ask some help on the official discord where the dev is around, if there's really something going on with your configuration.

Sounds like something is going on because your specs blow mine out the water and I have no performance issues. Have you tried running the public test build through the steam client? There has been some optimization recently

Yes, I'm running the public test build. I'm averaging 30 FPS. I managed to get to 50 FPS, but I had to turn down the resolution to 100%, and the refresh rate set to 80 Hz, and I had to turn off 6 cores, and over-clock to 4.5 Ghz, but after during all this, the visual quality was poor.

Are any of you guys modifying the setting on the Nvida display panel?

Why settings are you guys using in the Steam VR interface.

Disable supersampling, smoothing. And check the ingame option to cap your fps.

Yea, I already disabled the smoothing and super sampling, but didn’t know you could limit the FPS.

Thanks, I’ll give that a try.

Maybe try a rollback of nvidia driver. I've read something about versions beyond 442 being a bit funky in regards to vr. Just a thought

The thing is, that when I play half-Life: Alyx at 120 Hz, at 150% resolution, and every game setting is at the max value, my GPU and CPU are well below the max performance line on the GPU and CPU performance meters and the game is buttery smooth. I am thinking that the issue is with the Unity engine not being fast enough for VR. VOTL VR uses the unity game engine. I hear Bionetworks, also a Unity game has the same issues as well as The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners which I believe is also based on the Unity game engine.

Once I learn how to play DCS World in desktop mode, I plan to play it in VR mode to see how it compares to VTOL VR as far as framerate goes. DCS World uses its own proprietary game engine. DCS World is way more complex that VTOL VR.

My hardware is not nearly as good as yours (i5-9600k, 1070 TI, 16 GB RAM) but I can run many graphically comparable games at 90 HZ minimum with 100% screen resolution. Yet I can't seem to achieve adequate performance in this game regardless of my settings. It's a real shame, because I adore this game and I would love to spend more time in it, but the performance issues really limit my enjoyment.

Hopefully some performance optimizations will come in future updates.

I have to agree with this because I'm on an old 1080ti rig and the game is silky smooth. I left the settings as they were after install, didn't alter anything. I'm running the recommended super sampling on the vive pro

My spec : rtx 2080 super
i5 9600k
16go 3200mhz

Supersampling x1.7 on my oculus rift CV1, the game is crystal clear and run without any sluttering ( except the first 2-3 sec when entering a mission )

i'm playing throught steam vr.

When I first bought the game, running through oculus it all laggy and choppy, but when I launched to steamVR it was smooth

I started to play the A10C module in DCS and I get a constant 60 FPS when running my Valve at 120 HZ with no lag, very few dropped frames, and much more graphics fidelity. So I'm not sure what the issue is with VOTL VR. I tried all of the solutions given to me so far and no change in performance. As a comparison, I can run Farcry 5 with every graphics setting maxed out and I get 120 - 175 frames per second; I get the same results with GTA V. So the issue has to be something that i have set on my system that VTOL VR doesn't like.

Thanks for all the help.
