VTOL VR

Multiplayer should have been there from the start.
VTOL VR is a great game and well made for the VR experience, but having played Vox Machinae it has really driven home the feeling that VTOL VR is severely lacking in terms of future fun and replayability.
I've played flight sims my whole life and I can safely say that playing on your own is insanely boring and dull compared to flying with other people; DCS World is extremely fun to play with other people but the VR experience of that game is horrible. I have no idea why multiplayer for this game is pushed aaaaaalll the way down the very bottom of the list of planned features. Just seeing it way down there (in the probably-won't-happen pile) kind of ruins the potential of this game for me. It's disappointing to think I may never get to share VTOL VR with my friends and I feel like I've already exhausted the novelty of flying around on my own shooting at circles on the ground during early access and it doesn't feel like enough can be added in terms of weapons, ATC and things to really ignite any excitement for the future of the game.

Please don't take this as a negative post in any way as I *love* this game, I just desperately wish MP would get a higher priority rather than a "yeah maybe".

How many other people feel the same way?

Regards,
Al

Towards the end of the early access phase, I repeatedly hinted that I would be working on multiplayer soon after the game hits v1.0.
I get asked about this almost every day, so I'd like to lay out what I can tell you so far. I've actually had running multiplayer prototypes since 2018 but it ran on a third party networking service that I didn't want to rely on. Instead I wanted to take advantage of what's included in Steamworks since it's technically already being paid for. About a year ago I began working on a custom networking system using the latest tech available to me such as the new SteamNetworkingSockets API through Valve relays, flatbuffers data serialization, LZ4 fast compression/decompression, and good practices such as delta compression to minimize bandwidth, reduce latency, and reduce CPU usage for the best possible MP experience in VTOL VR. Since this is a pretty large task for me and I have never really done this before, I am developing a smaller, much simpler game to run the system through its paces, and bring it to a reliable state before implementing it into VTOL VR.
It's an air racing game with the same physics and controls as VTOL VR, where pilots will compete against each other in supersonic jets around tunnel race track. @Themorris and I have already flown races against each other and have done a few dogfights using VTOL VR cannons to test it out, and it is looking pretty smooth!
Another reason I have chosen to work on a second game is that I will not charge extra for the addition of multiplayer features to VTOL VR, but I want to provide an opportunity for those of you who are willing to support my continued work on it, so the racing game will be made available on Steam for about $10 (release date TBD).
You can think of purchasing that game as directly supporting continued VTOL VR development.

Hi
well said , i agree, flying with a buddy or group in VR is very satisfying, very immersive experience , multiplayer is awsome,i played yesterday in IL 2 Stalingrad, with 3 buddys and had the most fun, some formation flying , then search and fight , great stuff. We need multiplayer for this game, VTOL has come a long way since i got the game, hats off to the dev for making this SIM , this is the future, using the vive controls is flawless, i love it, looks and runs great on the pimax 5kplus.

I totally agree.
I normally will not even consider buying a game that is SP, because I know I will rarely play it.
I only made an exception for VTOL since I was hunting quality VR titles, but I play it nowhere near as much as I would like to because it is only SP.

The developer should really push this feature to the very top. I know a bunch of ppl that would vbuy the game if we were able to play it together.

I absolutely agree with that. Replayability doesn't exist. I played it 1 hour and less even tho i like this game. It should have DEFINITELY been there since the beginning. I think that the dev just doesn't really know how to actually implement a multiplayer.

He absolutely does..it's just not a priority.

I'm surprised there has been little to no mention of the fact that VTOL VR has a small modding community now, of which someone is creating a multiplayer mod. And succeeding at it.

Even if BD doesn't create official multiplayer, the chances that VTOL VR will never have multiplayer are pretty slim at this point.

And despite all this, BD ALSO hinted that he would look into working on multiplayer after 1.0 anyway. So... once again, the chances that this game won't have multiplayer are pretty slim.

It's not an IF, it's a WHEN.

I too would LOVE if this game was multiplayer, and it is one of the things I am most excited for, but it hasn't stopped me spending 72 hours in the game so far, which is quite a lot considering I never play singleplayer games.

For me it`d be nice if you can play missions in Coop Online. I dont think of a 1 v 1 or arenas or whatever battle royale of the skies... (lol) only Coop!

Well I say Vox Machinae should have single player from the start :steammocking:

Lol wrong discussion but i agree +1

Wow, I'm stoked this topic has generated such discussion. Thanks everybody for your replies and thoughts on this subject!

Thanks tae for the info! Such good news about the modding community, I had no idea there even was one.

I moved house nearly a year ago and haven't had a chance to set up my VR yet so I imagine the game has evolved a fair bit in that time.

You do realise that this game is made by just 1 guy...

I wish Vox Machinae had something better than bots for solo play with campaigns and missions.

Vox Machinae should have had that stuff from the start and be true to the MechWarrior legacy!

Or just let devs do what they want and are able to when they are able to if they are able to. VTOL VR would have been a very different game if they (he) just cared about PVP multi player from the start. That will be a nice addition if it happens but so many game elements people love wouldn't have been made if that was its original goal, just like Vox Machinae doesn't have them at all.

Multiplayer is not something essential for me. A game is fun from its gameplay, whether single player or multiplayer.

I Dont care for multiplayer just 'NOW', I first need some hours learning the game :), but damn, can't I wait for the time i can fly this thing with 2 wingmans that are my friends!

Yes I agree..but..I think the more people that buy and support the game will hopefully help increase development times and equal more content, It's crazy to think that it's made by only one single DEV!!!! hopefully he get's more money and get hire some help. as others have said there is a small modding community as well, between the two hopefully we get everything we could all want

This game not having multiplayer and the developers having multiplayer as such a low priority is actually stopping me from buying it. Great games without multiplayer really do lack replayability.(unless your playing an RPG like Skyrim with infinite mods a community development)

I have a feeling I am not the only one who isn't buying this game for that reason.

i know this is a bit late to post but nobody cared to mention to you that this was made by one person. give him some slack, single player or not this is by far the best flight sim ive ever played in not only vr but in general.
