For IR (fox 2) guided missiles (aim-9, airs-t) you need the seeker head to lock onto the target by itself by pointing your aircraft directly at the enemy. You should get an audible tone if good. You can then fire.
Better still go into the weapons management display and change seeker to head-tracking. You can then target by looking at the enemy.
The radar (fox 3) guided missile (amraam) you need to turn on your radar. Adjust the range on the radar to find the target. Move your cursor over the target and click to add to your target list. Click on it again (or the respective target number on the left of the radar screen) to actually get a fireing solution. You can now shoot when in range.
On the f-45 ignore the radar screen. Use the TSD. Turn radar power on and click on the target. If the line between you and the target appears you can shoot
