how far cities should be apart is upto you , 3 tiles for each city lets them work there max but often it can be worth having them 2 tiles for each city apart.
I generally like to found cities no less than 5 tiles apart to maximize my coverage.
@Del Thats pretty much what I decided on about 5 or 6 tiles. Allowed me to quickjly connect cities and establish trade routes. Seems work to work really well.
In Civ 5 I remember sending out lone colonist to set up cities on specific resources before an enemy city could. Beyond Earth seems like it will punish me for that.
Very subjective.
If you want to "go Tall" - a few, very populated, cities - you want to have zero overlap of workable tiles, placing them so that there are at least 6, possibly as many as 7 ort 8, tiles between city centers.
If you want to "go Wide" - lots of less-populated cities - you will want to pack them in closer together, with 3 to 5 tiles between each city center.
