Failure to start - report here
Please use this thread to report the game failing to start, or failing to start fully. Please include your system specs, and preferably a link to a pastebin of your dxdiag (use Google to find out what that means if you don't know).

This is not a place to rant about it, but feel free to express your displeasure in a polite and restrained way while reporting.

Other threads will be closed, or merged in here, at moderator discretion. We're trying to keep this thread to straight reports.

If you can start a game, but then crash, that's not this thread. If you can't get to the main menu, that is this thread. If the game crashes very soon after reaching the main menu, use this thread. If you're part way through setting up a game, or looking at the credits, or whatever, use a different thread.

DO NOT download supposed fixes from untrusted websites, torrents etc. Drivers should only come from manufacturer websites (either specific hardware manufacturers or nVidia/AMD/Intel)

It may help to provide your dxdiag report. Instructions on how to do this may be found in the OP of the "game crashing" pinned thread.

Things that have worked for some:

  • Update graphics drivers. If you have Intel integrated graphics, and the OEM drivers (eg HP) are old, try installing the drivers provided by Intel. This will give you a warning that you have manufacturer-specific drivers installed, and should update from them; given that you can't, go with the Intel drivers. However, create backups and a restore point first, as there are some systems where the OEM drivers are actually necessary. If you don't have Intel integrated graphics, look at the AMD/nVidia website as appropriate. If you have integrated graphics that aren't Intel or AMD (or nVidia, if they make any), this game most likely won't work for you.
  • Check whether you actually meet the minimum requirements. People with graphics that don't support DirectX10.1 report this sort of problem, generally. Some with under-powered cards that support the right version of DirectX will get a bit further and then crash, or get strange graphics problems.
  • If it's Steam error 53, or "still encrypted", that usually means the install has gone slightly wonky in some way, or security software is getting in the way. It's a bit unpredictable.
  • Some people got over these problems by running the VisualC and DirectX redistributables found in the game's install directory (in subdirectories, possibly). For some people that this hasn't helped, completely uninstalling these before reinstalling has helped.
  • The problems with high-frequency displays discussed elsewhere (http://steamcommunity.com/app/65980/discussions/0/619569341114417237/) sometimes manifest as startup failure. If you have such a display, try turning your desktop refresh rate and/or resolution down, and seeing if you can start then. That's not the problem solved, but it identifies which version of the problem you have.
  • Some people have reported that turning off stereoscopic 3D ('3D Vision') solves the problem. Some even report that turning it on and off again, when it was off to start with, helps.
  • Disabling the Steam overlay has also been reported to help in some cases.
  • If you use multiple graphics cards in SLI or Crossfire, try turning it off.
  • If you were running the game fine under Windows 8, and it stopped working when you upgraded to 8.1, try completely removing the game and reinstalling it.
  • It may be worth trying deleting config.ini, graphicsettings.ini and usersettings.ini under C:\Users\XXX\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization Beyond Earth (or adjusted as appropriate for your system).
  • Some report getting the game to work by disabling graphics helper or utility software like MSI Afterburner or FRAPS.
  • For Win10 users, particularly those who upgraded their systems, verify all your game files if you have any problems. This is affecting lots of different games.
  • Also, make sure your graphics drivers are updated, and don't trust Windows Update to do this. Most vendors have put out new drivers for Win10.

Some notes on those steps, and others, are found in another thread (http://steamcommunity.com/app/65980/discussions/0/619569341080266527/)

Another useful discovery from another forum user:

Just in case anyone had problems starting the game that have two graphics cards I just thought I would mention that I could not get the game to start at all it kept saying failed to start unknown error. AMD control panel kept saying I had the latest driver that could be used for my laptop. I have 2 graphics cards the AMD being the most powerful. It would not let me update the AMD drivers for whatever reason until I had first updated the graphics card I never use when gaming the INTEL one.
1.Went to Intel website used their auto detect downlolad to download and install the latest driver.
2. Right after installing the new Intel driver the AMD control panel suddenly said I could update my AMD card. Once I updated and restarted my laptop Civ 5 beyond earth worked fine.
So in short make sure you update both your graphics cards. I could not update AMD without first updating my infieror intel card.
Everyone may have already known that but just thought I d share it just in case.
Some people still have problems after trying all of these things. I'm confident that Firaxis will be looking in to this. Providing dxdiags here, and reporting which solutions you've tried that haven't worked, might help them with that. Ranting and swearing will not.

If you want to be sure 2K know about your problem, and get official support, you need to contact 2K Support.

I have been unable to correct the issues , it starts to open but nothing happens, uninstalled reinstalled , did the same for the Microsoft Visual C++ , the uninstalled and reinstalled again. Tried launching directly from launch file CivilizationBE_DX11 and getting an error about a missing MSVCR110.dll worked through directx fixes for that , still no change that error remains. This was working previously so seems like my security setting are not involved. The missing file is on my system, but the game seems unable to open it. If it had a configuration ini , I would check to see if it is looking in the wrong location , but can not find anything like that. This seem like an update that broke it.
Windows 11. Tryed EVERYTHINGS outlined here. It just DOES'NT start at all. Verified integrity of game files. It says: "2 files failed to validate and will be reacquired." Verified again and it says THE SAME THING no matter how often it verify and reacquire. I think the problem is at the source; maybe some of YOUR files are corrupted!

ADDENDUM: I was wrong... Sorry. I deleted the ini files in the game directory and everything works fine now.

Just to add to anyone reading this and having issues first time running this game.

As the OP posts, try deleting the three .ini files from your My Documents>My Games>SidMeier'sCivBeyondEarth folder.

Worked for me after other things did not.
My CIV/BE fails to start. I ran the local file validation. I got the msg "Two files failed to validate and will be reacquired".

Does "reacquired" happen automatically, or do I need to take some specific action?

I ran the the validation a second time, a short time later and got the same msg, so it did not seem to happen automatically. What do i need to do?

If you check ANY Game in your library it will likely do the same message as there's always two files needed to reacquire.

Basically read through everything on this thread and you should be able to fix it.
I was hitting a roadblock after trying everything in the list, but did this in the order shown below and got the game to launch (just the original, core one).

- Uninstalled the Rising Tide DLC, Exoplanets was still installed though.
- Went to "Documents\My Games\SMC-BE" and deleted the three .ini files (Config, GraphicsSettings, and UserSettings)
- Did the file integrity checker on SMC-BE two times (probably only need to do once).
- Exited completely from Steam and relaunched it
- Went to SMC-BE and it did launch
- Did a test relaunch after that (to update graphics settings) and it did launch again.

Haven't tried again with RT DLC, but may in the future. Honestly, this is still way too much trouble just to get a game to launch. NEVER had these issues with Civ 5, not sure why BE is such a pain.

I can't say why it's so but I got mine working after just deleting the 3 ini files myself.

A few of the other tricks I'd tried to no avail, but as it worked from that point, and it still works, I left it at that.

Do note that I run in Windowed as it does have issues with fullscreen like a few older games.
