Civ 2, depending on the version you have, can be made to run on modern operating systems:

Including 64 bit operating systems without utilizing a virtual machine.
*off to amazon.com I go!!!*
DOSBox? VM? Don't make me laugh.
Real men own a real computer - the 486/DX100 system I bought in 1992 still runs both of them just fine.
I don't regret buying the Civ 5 complete edition - it's really well done - especially how it lets a few turns go by and some new dimension (like religion or spies) pops up. When Civ 5 first came out I tried playing the demo and was repulsed by it. So either I got softer or the game got much better. Looking forward to the "real" version of Beyond Earth - whenever that comes out in 5 years or so. :)
Thank you to everyone that tried to help....
and to the trolls (you know who you are solaris32) I hope the fleas of a thousand camels infest your nether region.
As for the new game.... I will reserve judgement. Time will tell....
