If you're already enjoying the game then why does "2013" even matter? You're putting an unnecessary filter on whether or not to play it. SMB3 is a 1988 game, but it's still one of the most fun games to play.
Light Plasma Pistol Weapon - Not necessary but a very versatile and powerful weapon that helped me out quite a bit (playing on Veteran, which is the 3rd of 4 difficulties)
Hangar 6 R&D - Short story campaign with a heavy focus on combat. Would recommend.
Codebreakers - Just a short minor operation that can be accessed during the main campaign. About the same quality as the base game, so take that as you will.
