Squire can get you the furthest, but you need a combination of many characters, especially when you get to late game.
If you got the summoner DLC then you should definetly level one up, since his units doesn't count up towards your defence units total

You will need a squire/apprentice, a summoner , an EV to boost, a monk for auras, and a trap huntress or ranger as well if you are planning to do Nightmare soloing - a couple of DPS characters wouldnt hurt either.

No such thing, you will need at least the basic 4 for towers + 1 extra whatever for DPS

squire takes a licken and keeps on ticken he can be both dps and a tower hero
many a time a squire being a wall has saved a game for me

Agreed he will need to switch like the rest of us, but, tee hee lol, this old fight again.
for the OP, the original 4:
-----------------------
Squire: pretty much needed. There is no subsitute for his piercing harpoon tower. And when you gear up its just a firehose, spraying angry monsterimpaling logs end-to-end without any gaps.

Monk: becomes necessary later on. Str drain and slow can be seriously underestimated and works against flying stuff as well. Lightning aura is useful, but priority is getting range (and health) for the 2 others. Damage will come as you gear up later. Heal aura can be incredibly useful in some bossfights.

Huntress: not necessary, but her traps are useful to fill a few niches in your arsenal, like exploding around corners or as (anti-kobold) minefields if you do not have sufficient coverage.

Apprentice: does not really provide anything that the squire does not and his towers have very poor projectile velocity without making up for that by bringing better damage (per DU).
In cramped shortrange situations the firetower does have some use, but it completely depends on strdrain aura to strip the elemental invulnerabilities to work reliably. Since you arguably should have a str-drain up anyway, you may find it useful where a harpoon takes too much space and the fire-AOE is better.
My least used builder of the 4.

If you dont have any dlc heroes, then pick a huntress as your first DPS hero while you learn the maps. Having a ranged DPS'er is very useful (specially with piercing weapon) to deal with wyverns or bastard mages that stay out of the reach of your defenses. Since she is also so frail, it will teach you the value of not getting hit.

i should specify a bit however, i dont really plan for doing nightmare alone, as 1 of my friends finaly has the game as well, and that i have the summoner dlc, i have a level 10 of every class but huntress as i dont like playing as her. but i could consider using her as a dps character while others create towers

Squire/Countess will take you through mostly all the insane levels just using the bouncers and harpoons. Countess is much faster for setting up, but requires the add on pack. For nightmare levels I use the Summoner, Monk and EV as well and on a couple maps I use the Huntress for gas traps to help delay them. Everyone finds there own perfered method of playing and for myself it's mainly solo due to poor internet connection, so I need those four. If I didn't have the add on packs I would say the Squire/Monk would the best two to work on first. Cheers.

squire with the Mitt Romney or Tycho skin is about as fast as a countess

I would say summoner because there archer units are OP in most cases because they can attack both air and ground units.

It's certainlly the Apprentice the best solo hero. He has towers that offer much both in the defensive and the offensive, you can finish the game in the insane mode with him only, not using a single defense from another hero.
The problem with him is that he is hard to master, his defenses is not as obvious as a harppon, but highly speciallized killing machines, that have certain requirements to become fully effective, but can cover all situations none the less. Remember that with apprentice the best towers are Deadly Strikers > Lightning Towers > Fireball > Blockade > and the useless magic missile.
Softspokenman May 3, 2014 @ 9:55pm
apprentice towers are not nearly as used or as useful when you hit nm levels trendy really balanced him badly for it
that is why most prefer squire I'm sure some will argue that he can be as good as a squire but
you are really just making life harder for your self
TAScalde May 4, 2014 @ 2:21pm
Not at all Softspokenman, he can be usually used less, surely, but that does not make apprentice a weak hero at all.
I have screen shots of my apprentice taking on most stages and the kills that his towers have are just ridiculous, apprentice is hard to master, that is a fact, but he's not weak, and I can prove it, and throught insane play, that will be the ONLY hero you'll need.
FLOORSCRAPS May 4, 2014 @ 2:51pm
Well to be fair Alcalde I could beat Insane HC with JUST a huntress OR a monk any properly geared character can beat any map on insane.

Unfortunately the Squire Harpoon Turret damage scales better than the Fireball Tower making the Harpoon Turret stronger which you'll only use either Harpoon Turrets or Fireball Towers late Nightmare anyways as there are better alternatives for any other defense they have to offer.
TAScalde May 4, 2014 @ 4:03pm
Avous, but on my first comment I noted that the Deadly Striker is much, but much better than the Fireball tower, on nightmare play, Deadly Strikers is what makes you reach wave 25 on survivals with Apprentice, even if the harppon damage scales better, a tower is not only about damage, otherwise Apprentice's Lightning Tower would be useless.
Again I'll note this, I'm a Apprentice Nightmare player, with some top rankings on survivals, and I can definitely say that Apprentice is not a bad builder and the thing with him is that it's hard to build with him, as the Lightning Tower and the Deadly Striker is hard to propperly manage, that's all.
And can you finish the survival mode with just Huntress or Monk? I beat the game with low stats using only Apprentice as a damage builder, and some auras, no minions, no traps, just mage towers.
