Is it the gun speed or gun damage that counts ?
I have an ult gun in ranked that has very high damage( 1 mil dps), But the gun shoots arrows so slow my jester can run faster then the arrows. And i was thinking i could look for a gun thats weaker but faster and get the same dps.

you just got a gun with minus on projectile speed. Yes you should look for another gun :huntress:

you can always spend some upgrades into projectile speed stat... some say 10k is enough for them and some only aim for the max which is 30k.... that is for nm
for insane i think even 5k should be more than fine

whenever you upgrade a weapon for dps all upgrades goes into dmg after the misic or optimized
charge speed for staffs, number of projectiles, fire rate and projectile speed

sidenote since you are playing in ranked you can always export to open and test the upgrading path there 1st using the mana mod map

Check my guide on Lupine Bows, should give you an idea on Projectile Speed and why it is "slightly" important on NM. Link: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=150195137

Basically a user asked why Projectile speed is important:

Because if it's less, then each projectile takes more time to travel from point X to Y.
If it's higher, the time taken is less. Find any random weapon with a projectile stat of Less than 5000 and compare it with something having more than 10000, highly noticeable difference.
Moreover, in Nightmare Mode, projectile speed stat takes a nerf, so if you have a 5000 speed projectile, it will be significantly less in NM. Hence, higher projectile speed is required.

Lastly, since it is not hitscan tracking, you actually have to lead your projectiles vis-a-vis your target(if it's moving). Therefore having a slower projectile speed would mean you will have to lead your gun farther and then fire a shot by presuming your target's moving position, which mind you can randomly change due to 'n' number of events.

Obviously if you very close to your target then it doesn't matter. But in the case of upgrading your towers, i.e. this case, you will be close to your towers and far off from the enemies.

found some good guns tonight, an myth triple shot that shoots 3 arrows at a time that has kinda low damage but great speed, Also found an ult shotgun in a store that does amazing damage but shoots slow and reload is ♥♥♥♥

Ugh, I assume those would be generic weapons.
Yeah, generics aren't as great. :squirtmeh:
Try farming some King's Game on Nightmare or Akatiti Jungle on Nightmare.
The weapon drops on these two maps are very nice, pretty much top end stuff.
Also Tinkerer's Lab(Insane) is good too for farming Blaster Rifles.

speed also affects range of your weapon
projectiles are timed so how ever far one can travel in x seconds is its range

one more thing unless you are playing a hunter use a mages staff you never need to reload and you will out dps guns by a large margin clavas and ult classics are best
make sure they have positive charge rate 60-80 is best for most and dont use auto fire you will lose up to 50% of you dps

rainmakers are the highest dps but they are expensive and almost certainly hacked

There are actually multiple weapons that are better than Clavas for DPS weapons.

Damage per upgrade:

Eagle Crested Standard: 147.875
Bloodshot Staff: 144
Crystal Staff: 128
Obsidian Clava: 122.3
