As for the limitation, try to think of it another way:
Animus are limited to the 4 weapon groups (1 for each of the 4 original heroes).
The summoner is not allowed to use any weapons and thus not any of the animus.
The other DLC heros have access to (some of) the 4 groups and the associated animus.
From the p.o.v. of highend stomping enemies it does not matter, there are better options. However i would agree that it is a foolish limitation with next to no 'lore' excuse that would not be contradicted by e.g. jester and EV being allowed to have them.
All I can say is; 'Uguu…'
They are by far not the best pet in the game, not stat nor dps wise. Best DPS would be Mega Chicken or Sea Horse(because it's easier to farm) and best tower pet would be Kobold or Diamond.
Then why can the EV, Jester, and Barbarian use them?
I'm guessing because the animus's restrictions are tied to weapon class restrictions. Summoner has no weapon class. Kind of like Tydo said in the first reply.
My mistake, I meant weapon classes, not male/female counterparts. But yeah, Summoner would be good if he even didn't have any pets equipped.
And that would pretty much break the ability to do a lot of NM survival runs.
The reason I brought this up was because I wanted a guardian on one shoulder, and an animus over the other. Like anime, or Ultimate Spiderman.
@Tydo: Are you able to solo any NM runs?
I like to play the game for fun.
I haven't played pokémon in a while because everyone is all whiny about how bad I am at the game. There's only two goals in the game: beat the E4, and collect all the pokémon.
Although you just started Otaku-chan I suggest to take a look at the guide below. It will give you some ideas how to prepare your heroes for Nightmare difficulty. For sure you are able to play a lot (if not all) on an easier difficulty.

That's the kind of talk I like to hear.
As for mythical gear, yeah it really is underrated. I've got a couple characters with stats at 1000 just off of gear, and most of my gear is mythical. It takes time but you really can find some nice myth gear if you keep at it.
