Getting collection when already owning the game

I already own the game, but due to the sales i want to get all the dlc. If I buy the collection version which includes the game + all dlc, what will happen with the copy of the game? can i get the dlc and leave the basic game as a gift?

If it's like other games I've seen the spare copy will arrive as a gift.

It is always a surprise what happens e.g. Borderlands 2 GOTY does not provide an additional copy of the base game. Let us known what happens to you with DD :)

It won't give you a basic game as a gift, of course. The CD-KEY once activated is attached to one steam account. When you activate new key, you simply 'overwrite' the old one. It can't show 2 games because it would be stupid to have 2 Dungeon Defenders in library, once that launches with DLC and one that doesn't. Same thing happens with GOTY editions because the extra content is added, but the game is kept since you already own it.

I also had basic DD and activated DD Complete later.

I think that's because Borderlands 2 GOTY is not a software bundle. It's just one game with all the dlc in it tied to one key. The way this bundle looks it's all separate.

OP: now that the bundle is at 75% off I'd buy the bundle even if I had just vanilla.

It's quite a good deal with discount but the thing is that few months ago, DD complete was included in humble bundle with some other games for the price of 5$. I actually bought a key from a guy for 5$ paypal month ago. If you're lucky enough to find a seller, you could get it even cheaper.
