The "emulators" are for simulating controllers. The reason is because you can level multiple characters at once, each active hero gets map completion rewards (like weapons, random pets, etc.), you get survival wave pets per active character (so you can farm good pets faster due to the RNG), and accessories. In addition, more players = more max # of loot on the ground before older loot starts replacing newer loot (mainly for survival once you get into nightmare difficulty and start farming armor, dif can be like 32 items with 1 player vs 120+ with 4 players or around that).
