Game won't work, please help.
Whenever I start the game, it freezes and my screen goes black and I have to turn off my computer and restart to use it again. I don't know how to reset the game and when I try to go and configure advanced settings, it says failed to start (missing executable). What do I do? Please help!

I had the same issue. You can play in window mode or run C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\ARMA Cold War Assault\ColdWarAssaultPreferences.exe to change the resolution. (Try your screens native resolution)

Didn't work. I tryed my native resolution and it didn't respond, tryed autodetect and it didn't respond, and I tryed in windowed mode and it didn't respond.

From another steam thread.

Go the game files, set ColdWarAssault.exe to Windows 7 compatibility mode and run it as an admin. Should work now.
Do you have sli / crossfire?
Also, in ColdWarAssaultPreferences.exe do you see more than one option in the drop down box above the resolution?

Set it to compatibility mode and ran it as admin, but it still didn't work. Don't have crossfire and put it to 1920 by 1080, my default res.

1.
  • Close steam
  • Right click steam shortcut
  • Click Run as an Administrator
  • Click Continue
  • Go to All Games
  • Right click Arma Cold War Assault
  • Click Properties
  • Click Local Files
  • Click Verify Integrity of Game Cache
  • Run Arma Cold War Assault in windowed mode.

2.
Open C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\ARMA Cold War Assault\ColdWarAssault.cfg in notepad. Then change refresh to refresh=60;

3.
Don't use Autodetect, Arma is an old game and it might not detect modern computer hardware.
Change all the settings in the Display group box in ColdWarAssaultPreferences one at a time. (Things to try - a lower res - a different aspect ratio - different Display device setting etc.)
Follow the steps below to change the settings. (You should then be able to close Arma if it crashes, instead of restarting the computer.)
  • Run ColdWarAssaultPreferences.exe
  • Change a setting
  • Click Exit
  • Run Arma Cold War Assault from steam in windowed mode.

We had this problem with an Alienware laptop running the NVidia GEForce GTX 980M video card. We fixed the problem by switching the video source from the onboard Intel integrated video to the NVidia card in the GEForce Control Panel. After that, ArmA started right up.
