When the game was released my father and me were totally stunned by the nice graphics, the massive maps, the realism and the controls ( the opporunities you have, like you can salute, you can pick up guns, you can hide bodies, etc ), and I can remember how much time we spent in the editor creating our own missions, even to play against each other, or did some sort of competitions about some missions to see who is the better one.
This was back then!
What I am trying to say is, this game is AWESOME, it's just old, so people try to compare it to new and easier games. Arma always was a game for thinkers, strategists and people who just like to solve difficult situations. The modern game ( mostly young gamer, new generation gamer ) buys the game, starts playing it, and expects it to be as easy as Arma 3, Call of Duty or Battlefield 4. So I can pretty safely say, it's the fault of the customer, not the actual game. Someone who does not read him/herself in to this game before buying, and expect a 2001 released game to be like modern games, simply has no clue what is going on.
It's a fact that games back then were different, not only when it comes to graphics, control and stories.
As someone who is playing games since 1992 ( since my birth ), I would even go this far and claim that games back then, were much more difficult compared to modern games, for example half-life, you have to figure things out to continue, while in modern games, they even show you the path you have to go, and make certain options rise in some sort of colour so you don't have to figure it out yourself. There are not many modern games that actually could be compared to the difficulty and in/-output of 'old games'.
That's just my personal opionion I built on a very long gaming experience, but I think, it pretty much hits the point.
If I would have to pick two games that definitely had an influence on my childhood, I would pick this one and Stronghold 1.
That's what I am saying, it's a good game..this is why it never gets boring. People who try to judge this game by control and graphics in 2016, are just not clear-minded. Besides that, I find the control pretty easy, after playing an hour you are totally used to it.
The controls for heli can be a ♥♥♥♥♥, but I find it good this way, because it is hard to fly a heli in real-life, so it also is hard in the game. I was flying a helicopter in real life once, and I never want to do it again, I nearly crashed it in to the ground, lol.
