Large scale optimization

Would it be possible to have a better use of modern hardware (patch ?) to enable real large scale scenarios. Or an Arma like game or another game modded that sacrifice graphics for gameplay (and large scale) ? Thanks for your answers

Unofficial 2.01 patch is the best it gets currently:

It improves memory use, rendering, CPU use, fixes MP server browser, adds new commands, etc. However, it does not deliver real multi-core support. We're still waiting for that ("FP GL" is a fan-powered project that is porting the game to a new engine - here's a vid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3MZdoOdhws ).
