Arma: Cold War Assault

Arma: Cold War Assault

This vs normal ARMA
From what I gather, this is the only ARMA title on steam that wasn't originally an ARMA title, rather, it was an Operation Flashpoint title. The other 2 OF titles on steam are supposedly not very good.

I'm curious, is this game basically the same sort of game as ARMA? Or is it different in some key ways or anything, considering it was a different game series.

I would really like to know about any differences if there are any.

It is really just the saame. The newer aAArmA games were built up on this one, meanig they took mechanics from this game, and put them into the newer ones. So it is baasically like the newer Armed Assault games.

Bohemia Interactive developed this game Operation: Flashpoint and it was first released in 2001. The publisher of OFP was Codemasters. Eventually Codemasters and Bohemia Interactive split up and BI decided to go the independent route. So, Codemasters kept the rights to the name (Operation: Flashpoint) and BI kept the engine, gameplay, design, mechanics, etc... BI later refined OFP and updated their proprietary engine (Real Virtuality) and released their first independent title in the series, basically a direct sequel to Operation: Flashpoint, called Arma (Arma 1). Then BI released Arma 2 and Arma 3, all of these games were developed and published by Bohemia Interactive and used the same core graphics engine (Real Virtuality) albeit with massive updates and overhauls with each generation of the engine. Codemasters fought a legal battle to retain rights to the original series name: "Operation: Flashpoint" but since they had split up with Bohemia Interactive (the original developers) they hired a completely different, new development team to make Codemasters' sequel to OFP, titled Operation: Flashpoint Dragon Rising, and later they released Operation Flashpoint: Red River. The Codemasters OFP sequels were never as good as the Bohemia Interactive-developed games and they never gained a large community or fanbase like the true BI sequels (the Arma series) did. So, when Arma 3 launched in 2013 a few months later BI decided to re-release a slightly patched version of the original OFP game from 2001 in order to integrate their developed games into the "Arma" franchise name. So, this game you are wondering about, Arma: Cold War Assault, is actually the original 2001 game Operation: Flashpoint but re-titled and re-branded to fit into the current Bohemia Interactive franchise. Other than the title swap, Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Assault is exactly the same game as the original Operation Flashpoint, although it now includes all of the addons (DLC) that were released for OFP back in the day, including OFP: Resistance, Red Hammer, etc... into Arma: Cold War Assault in one package.

Actually the Red Hammer Campaign is still copyrighted by Codemasters and is not included in ArmA: CWA, but you can easily integrate the campaign into your game. (Look for Red Hammer guide in the community hub)

Well Red Hammer isn't released in this version as it's originally created by Codemasters, but it's possible to get it through downloads.

Because of the debacle with Codemasters, Arma 3 is actually Arma 4. I always tell newbies to play through the first campaigns to get a feel of the series. The original OFP campaigns are superior to the later ones
