MagiCat

Performance on Steam Deck is just fine under Proton 8 (used to suck under ancient SteamOS/P7)
*Editing in a Spoiler here - Turns out that Magicat runs a lot faster in Desktop Mode. Something is being funky in Game Mode.*

I'm getting 30s-40s framerate in Magicat. It's not awful, but definitely could be smoother. lowering the refresh rate doesn't seem to help.

MagiCat is using an old game engine that did not support exporting to Linux, and because of that, SteamOS would use Proton to run the Windows version of the game.
Proton probably does not support MagiCat's old game engine that much, which then resulting on that low framerate.

I don't think I can do anything in development side to make it better.
Not sure if any tweak like Proton GE would help it.

I tried it with Proton 7.0, 6.3, Experimental (which oddly has a different axis assignment for the crosspad), GE 7-20 and GE 6.21.

Now, that is in "Game Mode", which uses a slightly secret-sauce Wayland and Vulkan setup. I think. In Desktop Mode (which I'm pretty sure is X11), according to your title-bar text it is hitting 60FPS. And BOY does it feel a whole lot faster.

Had serious performance issue too on my Debian laptop, switching from wayland to x11 resolved it.
Thx for the tip rotopenguin
I ran this on steamdeck LCD 256gb and i didn't have any problems

I just gave the game another go, and it is perfect with Proton 8. Things have advanced a lot since the Steam Deck originally came out.

Sometime after your original post, I experienced framerate problems in this game as well. I spoke to the developer and we figured out that the problem was V-Sync, so an option was added to toggle it on and off.
I always wondered if that was the reason for your framerate drops, but looks like it was a completely different thing! Glad you were able to sort it out!
