Crafting Items

Sooooo I was wondering about the crafting mechanic. I was under the impression that if you crafted an item using thorium (which is very rare), that item would transfer across runs like with relics and upgrades. It seems like this isn't the case. Am I missing something or is crafting kind of pointless?

If you craft an item it unlocks and starts dropping inside the dungeon. You also get one freebie to try out. If you do multiple relics the latter ones get stolen though so beware. Not sure how many potions/blessings you can hoard and activate at once, haven't really bothered.
It's definitely not pointless and thorium is not rare at all, it's actually rather common.
