Game kinda runs slow (linux)

When I open this game on steam, running linux, it all feels like few milliseconds delayed. Particularly noticeable in the menu animations. Anyone can suggest how to fix this?
My impression is that this has to do with running the game through an emulator perhaps - if that's the case, is there a way to run this game without steam?
