We are thinking about doing something new in NC/JYDGE universe, but no definitive plans yet. We'll also update JYDGE with at least one new mission later this spring, but that's just a small(ish) update.
NeonChrome is still my favourite, probably because I really dig the roguelite aspect a lot in many other games, a litlte more each day. I should probably replay it!
Time Recoil was a very different game, being very story-oriented for a twin-stick shooter, but I got a little lost between the ins and outs of the constant time travel to catch up with the story at some points.
I'd also suggest checking Crimsonland, if you're into arcadey games (like, survive, kill for points, and that's all), since it was the first 10tons twin-stick shooter, I guess.
It also evolved to the later Tesla vs Lovecraft, their lastest released game, that basically carries Crimsonland's formula a little further, with many improvements in gameplay and a less generic theme, so it's worth checking later!
On HELLDIVERS, I had lots of fun with it when it launched, but I guess it was because I was playing with a friend online, mainly. It gets old too fast, mainly due to the semi-stealth in "try to kill the monsters that alert" and lack of ammo for a long run, but the accidental friendly-fires and other general stuff made it really fun (vehicles, turrets, casting stratagems, respawning on pod-drops). I'm a huge fan of Arrowhead, its devs. I really hope they go indie someday...
I guess my all-time favourite Twin-stick shooter is currently Nine Parchments, from the guys of FrozenByte (Trine series)! That game made me play for like 40 hours in 3 days, and even now that I don't touch it alone, any friend I have that's not into twin-stick shooters end up liking it.
Moreover, they're from the same country as the folks from 10tons (Finland), so who knows, maybe we could say it's the best country for twin-stick shooters? Funny enough, Arrowhead (Helldivers) is from Sweden, which is really really close to Finland... I think I see a pattern emerging...
That's nice to hear!
I sometimes dream about an open-world twin-stick shooter. Having played a few open-world AAA games recently, I wonder if that'd be possible to nail, and keep the fun around it. Would certainly be a nice challenge!
Also wonder when you guys are going to give a shot at online coop, haha! Anyway, with Parsec, I'm already able to play local coop games online, so I guess I don't really need online coop at all! I guess I just wish people would stop demanding online multiplayer from indie games in general, perhaps...
We'd love to do online coop (or even pvp) focused game, but the business aspect of it is a bit tricky. You need to have lots of players to have a successful online game where you can find ppl to play with/against. Many indie games games have failed in this and get poor reviews because the experience isn't very good. This probably means we'd need to make it free, which makes the business aspect even trickier. We've done some f2p game on mobile, but I don't think same kind of stuff is that well received on PC/consoles. Also we'd hate to design the game around monetization which is kinda what you need to do (there are good examples of this too).
As for sandboxy/open(ish)world game.... we're actually developing a super secret game that sort of falls into this category. It's still early days, so don't want to talk too much about it, but we'll most likely start leaking information about it in 3-4 months!
Online games nowadays are about some sort of "all-or-nothing" strategy, considering the amount of competition.
I just wish the consumers were more comprehensive on this matter, but that would be to ask too much, certainly.
People love deeming games as "dead, noone online, don't buy it" on reviews for no logical reason. It's indeed a risky business, if you can't gather enough players, and moreover, mantain them for sometime... and people will start complaining about "end game", as if everything is a MMORPG. It's a living nightmare.
I guess we gamers often forget that games should be about fun, and not about leveling, looting, or whatever rewards the games keep throwing at us. It's indeed a very tricky subject to deal with.
Not to mention the fact the oftenly, indie games (and some AAA as well) suffer to have a proper netcode, so desyncs/rubberbanding/disconnects are bound to happen, and people can't deal with them in a civil manner. It takes a lot of effort, time and money to have a near-perfect netcode, I reckon.
Nowadays is even worse, as there's the matter of direct connection x server-hosted, peer 2 peer, NAT punchthrough, NAT types and other nightmares devs have to attend to to make everyone happy.
Awesome! Ok, wake me up in 4 months!
* goes back to coffin *
It's probably for the better of the creators' integrity to omit online co-op what with possible syncing issues or the need to make it "pay-to-win" to succeed. That said, a friend told me there's a way to do online co-op using Hamachi, but I haven't tried that yet.
Any new 10Tons games ready for release or in development?
I just picked up Tesla vs Lovecraft and Jydge from this week's PS4 sale. I enjoyed Neon Chrome, but I usually get frustrated halfway through the majority of SoulsBourne and rogue-related games; although, I am drawn to them like a moth to the flame :) Jydge is more my style and I'm loving it! Keep up the great work!
Thanks for the great recommendation! My wife loves Harry Potter themed games. In site of her being a "girl gamer", Nine Parchments is the first time in ages that she has co-oped with me.
You're welcome, glad to help! If you need any other recommendations, feel free to ask, I'm a co-op junkie.
I look forward to your future game releases! I ended up buying all the 10Tons games available on the PS4 to tide me over.
