The only version i am able to buy is the "German Edition", which is a hard edit to make it aviable in germany. If you live in Austria (and possibly Swiss) you can also only buy this version and i do not like that even the americans talk german. This is actually immersion breaking and not fun to play

Listen, I am sure this is a great product in it's uncut version. However, the German version is UN-FREAKING-BEARABLE. I could live with no swastikas and even Hitler without or beard or named Heller wouldn't make me refund (which I did after 2 hours of playtime). The worst thing about the censorship in this game is the voiceover. No English language? Really? The WORST voice actors I've heard in a long, long time? No thanks. I like to get immersed to a certain degree, which is impossible for me with this version of the game. I love how the description says "Notice: To take account for local laws, certain symbols, and content that may be construed to violate § 86a of the German Criminal Code, have been replaced by no less atmospheric alternatives." This is hilarious to me. I watched gameplay of the standard version and this statement is a flat out lie! It IS less atmospheric. It IS worse. It's just not playable for me.
3/10 for the German version.

Bethesda's policy is a joke. They are required by german law to censor the imagery of the game (remove all nazi symbols) and as a bonus decide to remove all languages but german. This is plain lazy and unfair for all foreigners living in Germany and Austria plus their german voice over is pretty horrible. I unfortunatelly didn't read about this beforehand or I wouldn't have bought this game, at least I could stop a good number of friends from buying it. Bethesda fix the languages!

You can't even play the uncut version as Austrian, how ridiculous is that? My negative review will remain, until this issue gets resolved (meaning, that Austrians can access the international version of this game, with all references and the english soundactors)!

The game itself could be amazing, if the German version had not been mutilated a lot more than it needed to be, so let me start my review with a hearty SKREW YOU, BETHESDA, and I hope you get the crabs! That felt good.

I bought the UK version in hope that I would be able to activate it via VPN. Don't try the same, it's not possible at all and at this point I'm not convinced it'll even work after three months, as I was told it would. I get that Besthesda somehow had to remove the swastikas and other symbols that are called "Verfassungsfeindliche Symbole" in Germany, but they made loads of unnecessary decisions to mutilate the game that are nothing else than pure paternalism:

* Bethesda removed the English language and voices (which is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, because the Germans already speak German and saying "SS" or "Hakenkrreuz" or "Hitler" is no reason at all for censorship, not even in an arse backwards country like Germany

* while they were already ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ over German gamers, Bethesda thought why the hell don't we also ♥♥♥♥ over Austrian and Swiss gamers while we're at it, because everybody knows they all have the same laws and speak the same languages, "over there" in Europe, right? Wrong, Bethesda. Go suck a veiny one for that alone

* they removed parts of the game that completely mess up the immersion and even render what happens in the game nonsensical - without any justification whatsoever, mind you

* the German voices are orders of magnitude worse than the original voices. It's bad enough German synchronisation always sounds as if half of it was taken from a dirty movie, but since the original voices are really great, fitting and immersive, this stupid decision makes everything worse than it already is

* I have the feeling the gore isn't the same either, but that's not proven, it just feels less extreme than the uncensored version (which I've only seen on YouTube let's plays), but that may just as well be my contempt at Bethesda playing with my mind)

I couldn't enjoy this game one bit, because it doesn't feel authentic. I feel cheated, somehow dirty and I'm not even sure whether I'l finish the game in its censored German version, so I'l give it:

Paternalism and censorship have no place in gaming. In fact they shouldn't have a place anywhere. Once again, SKREW YOU, BETHESDA, I won't buy any of your games ever again, unless you cease mutilating games any more than you absolutely have to.

PS: Steam just tried to censor me too, so they can go do the same to the veiny one as Bethesda.

Bulls**t german version is crippled in content and has not even english audio available. Pointless.

I am German and I hate the german translation of this game. No accents at all. Everybody talks in the same lame and bored tone. Billy's mom and Fergus for example.

Remove all the nazi symbols...fine. But at least give us the english language.

First and last time I bought Wolfenstein on PC. Not going to play it on PC.

If you want to do yourself a favor. Buy the real "uncut" Version on PS4 or Xbox.

I can't recommend this game.
Censorship is ridiculous, unnecessary and absolutely overkill. It's a completely different game. Thats not Wolfenstein anymore.German Audio is really NOT good and lip sync is catastrophic. Story is crap because they changed too much .

What a shame they did to this game....

First and foremost: in principle I am leaning towards a positive review. As a German, I can live with the removal of the proper insignia, as I am selling it to myself as a fictional evolution in an alternative timeline which might have changed the Nazi symbols altogether. Also, I can understand that due to historical events, Germany would like to avoid discussions as to why games display Nazi symbols, which could be interpreted as tolerating the past happenings. Not removing everything remotely picturing the third Reich is a danger to profit of Bethesda - I get that too.

It appears that a lot of love went into the game, the music/albums, the art deco style, the Nazi machinery stuff and also that the writing doesn't take itself too seriously and a good mix of different characters on top of all that. I am quite fond of all this and having said that, I would rate the game a 7/10 from what I've seen since 1988 during my personal gaming odyssey so far. Next thing I'll do, is watch the uncut version on Youtube.

So why a negative review? It is for the German versions translation and voice acting. Again, I get that they changed "mein Fuehrer" to "mein Kanzler" and the Nazis became the regime and all that due to the abovementioned reasons. What irritates me a whole lot is that whoever translated the game to German did so quite literally. I don't see how slang, proverbs and general use of the English language make sense when translated directly to German. The other thing is the awful voice acting. It's like most of the characters just read their lines from the script, no soul put into their respective roles whatsoever. The only exceptions are Super Spesh and Frau Engel as both sound rather convicing to me.

Bethesda: for the next iteration, please find someone capable of doing a convicing localization for the German market and let real Germans and fans proofread/-view the result. It could turn future German versions into something much better.
