Sadly the multiplayer is a bit disappointing. You have to complete the first mission for the spark and the hammer. Then you create a session code in the multiplayer options and disable the AI companion. After that you have to be roughly in the same location in the world and press up on the pad. No idea about keyboard & mouse. Now you both should appear as the companion from your game to each other (for example, Jokell). Which is really disappointing, since even if the character creator is rather simple, the characters have a lot of personality and I would've loved to have shown mine and see my GF's character instead of the premade companions.

A question about multi-player: Can I play my Steam version of Ashen with a friend who got the game from the Epic store?

good question

that would depend who governs those servers.

if it's independant

the ds servers used to be independent long ago, so you could connect to them from whatever source, ofcourse these were still hardcopy days ( and LIVE was a thing )
later on they killed those and steam took control and set up new servers integrated into steam ( making it so only steam governed games could have an online ), ofcourse that's not relevant anymore either... ( cough cough, arteficial price inflation, cough )

so if it's independent, i see no reason why not
if it's epic governed by default.... probaby not, chances are steam is going ot have it's own set then and only connect us to us.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

if anything you should keep in mind that this is 1 year old by now. As such it's playerbase had seen it's peak already. Wether it be here or gog or epic, there won't be that much people playing this in general over ALL platforms.

You should mostly expect it as such and treat it as a 1 year old game.
aka
go with single player, be happy if you get some lucky co-op :)

as for a friend co-op... only one way to find out, i guess.
if all else fails, maybe convince one to rebuy at whenever the lowest pricesetting might be...

ofcourse that's a stupid reason in itself and depends purely on "how much you want to have friend co-op"

let's hope it's independent then :)
then again anapurna isn't exactly a big boy publisher ( liek the ea's of this world ).... i doubt they have the capital to support long term servers in their own name.

Just requested refund because of this "passive multiplayer" nonsense. They promised co-op, yet giving us this. After a year... They even released a DLC, but didn't fix co-op. That's a complete disappointment.

2015 E3 did state passive multiplayer in the likes of journey though.
that's what this is... misunderstanding is not on them..

granted i have turned it off
passive multiplayer basically means that any individual can join at random and wanders off "playing your game for you".
( even the active multiplayer in dark souls has this problem, at least there you decide wether or not to have to deal with it )

that's never usefull or pleasant ( part of that is on the other person for being that way, part is on the passive system. )

something like this works for journey where it's linear and straightforward with no real actions to make but experience a story.
in here it just means some dude goes activating random crap which you may not want activated yet.

an active system with player controll would have been more beneficial indeed :)

but it has always been advertised as a journey style passive. You may not like it, but don't blame them for you misunderstanding though :)

you can get a friend in here by restricting it to a specific corelating code. ( unless i misunderstood it )
doing this with someone you know can be fun ( it probably is )... strangers, not so much.

Well, i see "Online Co-op" mark on game's page. This usually means that i can play with a friend. So it seems i've been misled by the information i found on the game's page. It's not a big deal, since refund has been approved.

Crazy that in the year since launch the devs haven't improved this mechanic at all. Got their Epic money and ran i guess, but not before recycling a few assets into a dlc extra cash-grab.

You have ai companions, but you can turn them off, and you have real players, and you have specific conditions for them too.

refund is autoapproved under the simple conditions... it's an easy enough system :)

you can do it with friends though
turn on multiplayer
disable companion ai
insert a code in the required field

friend does the same

press the "beckon companion" and it can ONLY search for the corresponding code providing in the same area ( aka your friend and only your friend )

pretty much like the whole ( what was it called ) "choose your god" type thing in ds2. that pretty much restricted who you would connect to and had a solid way to find your friend in the randomness better. ( or more precise it prevented others from stealing your friends sign on the ground away from you )

technically you could argue that these types are in general not designed to be with friends and favour randomness. Can't deny that that is exactly the intend. Us finding a way around it in ds and getting a somewhat way around it here doesn't overrule the base intend.

nevertheless, i can get behind your view here. LIke i said above, it's a messy system that doesn't benefit this game in any way. Luckily for me i care little for some random or a friend, i'm fine with the ai ( even though it has some issues with climbing random spots )

if that is not your cup of tea, it's only understandeable to refund :)

again, i explained this yesterday

dev0s does not equal publisher
devs get no money for epic
devs get payed on delivery of product aka when they transfer the rights to anapurna OR when they get contracted by anapurna to build and design a game.

a studio is just regular work people who build something for someone else.

2 entities, 2 different things
the longer you keep saying A44 is ripping us off, over time someone will actually believe that
that is how you ruin a studio. BY HOLDING THEM RESPONSIBLE FOR THINGS THEY DON'T HAVE A SAY IN !!!

oooo, A44 so evil, i'll never buy a product from them again.. even though they ONLY made the game.
( it has some issues, right out of the box : white text on white with no dropshadow... unforgivable )
Publishing or epic on the other hand is NOT their fault.

Please stop spreading this false information

devs =/= publisher

So... How exactly do we disable the AI companion?
And what was all that about session codes?

Baby_Cookie[WOLF], i discovered this game a month ago by searching for
"souls-like with co-op", something like "Remnant: from the Ashes", but more focused on a melee combat. As i said before, i expected this game to have a proper co-op (based on tags and the information from game's page). Not having this feature is a dealbreaker for me.
You're comparing multiplayer of this game to DS, but none of DS games are having "co-op" tags.
The game itself is not half bad though. At least first two hours of it.
