Large Storage should be a little larger
Built my first one tonight and it was a bit of a letdown. It has double the inventory of a medium storage, but occupies about three times the space.

I mean c'mon... it's only advantage right now is that you save a tiny bit of time by having to look into one container instead of two.

What about, like, 56 slots instead of 40? (that'd be 8 rows of 7 slots instead of 5)

Other than that, the second chapter was amazing. Just finished pimping my raft with the new water tech and ornamental plants! <3

(Also, while we're here, may i suggest adding some sort of new and improved, powered scarecrow that automatically kills seagulls? Preferably in a very agonizing way.)

yeah there is less space inthe large storage than 3 chests stacked. Not worth the titanium burn

Yep. in fact, it should be even bigger than the proposed 56 slots.

Can you stack medium chests on top of each other? If not then the large storage is technically more efficient because the extra space it takes is vertical, which otherwise wouldn't be used.
I agree though, for how hard it is to find titanium the large storage needs to be bigger.

Until recently I thought we could only stack 3 chests, turns out with the right placement you can squeeze 4 chests on a single wall, taking almost the same amount of space as the new large storage (they'd end up being higher of course) and holding twice as much.

I can't agree more with OP. They look so good, and when they were teased I thought for sure they'd have 70-75 slots (14 or 15 rows of 5) given their size. That they only have 40 is a disappointment. - I may, sometime way in the future when I happen to have extra titanium laying around and the extra space to put one, build one just for the looks, but my walls of chests will be staying... I was so looking forward to replacing them too. :steamsad:

In less space even, because the four chests, while taller, have a narrower footprint, allowing you to cram even more chests in.

In my tests, in the same floorspace of four large lockers, I was able to fit twenty chests on a wall, which means the chests can store two and a half times more in the same floorspace.

The only thing to note is the chests go all the way to the ceiling, where the lockers don't, but in testing the vertical space efficiency, the spaces where the wall would change levels affected how the chests could be placed, so I couldn't get a solid result. However it was approximately a ten-to-three ratio of chests versus lockers.

From that, because they have identical depth (thankfully,) I estimate that twelve lockers take up the same cubic space as fifty wall-mounted chests, for four hundred and eighty storage slots against a whopping one thousand slots, or a storage efficiency of two hundred and eight point three percent in chests over lockers.

So yeah, for raw storage capacity, chests are the way to go, save that titanium.

It sounds like all of you are talking about stacking on a wall. I don't believe you can stack chests without a nearby wall, which means titanium storage has a niche use for freestanding storage efficiency.

true ... but how hard is it to build a wall where you need the storage?
the new storage blocks the view like a wall anyway, so might as well...

Just tested; you can fit 4 large storages in the footprint of about 1 foundation, but you can fit 10 medium storages (5 large storages equivalent) in roughly the same place (using a wall). It does seem like the large storages are a bit too small.

Efficiency is not the only factor, anyway. For me at least, but i have a feeling i'm not alone.

I guess i COULD stack as many storages as possible in one spot. Why don't i do that? Because it's a freakin eyesore. The Raft is my home not some sort of socialist factory.

The storage size should be bigger but more importantly, IMO, they shouldn't need titanium to make. Wood, scrape, 4 hinges and some bolts. Just because titanium is a new item doesn't mean all the new items need to use it.

or perhaps just less of it, like 1-2 ingots

Personally I'm thinking either increase the storage capacity to 100 slots, increase it to 50 and halve its size making it a locker instead of a cabinet, or make it have the unique feature of being able to hold more than 20 items in one slot (I'm thinking like 50 items per slot.)
Derpykat5 Oct 23, 2020 @ 5:56am
Here's an update; Small storages are less than half the storage but can be packed 50% more densely (12 instead of 8 in the same footprint). This leaves the numbers as:

Small: 12 storages x 8 slots = 96 space
Medium: 8 storages x 20 slots = 200 space
Large: 4 storages x 40 slots = 160 space

So not only is the jump from medium to large less impactful than the jump from small to medium (relatively speaking; S > M is a 150% increase, M > L is a 100% increase), but the packing ratio is worse (relatively speaking: S : M is 12 : 8 or 3 : 2 (66%), M > L is 8 : 4 or 2 : 1 (50%)), leading to a significant drop in total storage space per square foundation.

for me it would be fine, even better, if they would just smallen the model
