Voice Chat in Game

I can't seem to get voice chat to work.
I have my friends talking in game, but they say they haven't changed anything it just works as soon as you open the game.
I've already tried playing with steam settings, but nothing works.
How do I turn on or off in game voice chat, and maybe change the microphone and make sure it's the correct one?
