Hook barrels, craft a spear or hammer to repel the shark or expand / repair your raft (it's super cheap). Then get a purifier and grill, along with a fishing rod for food and you're golden.
Also dying early on is trivial, you can easily get back on track by picking up planks and plastic that passes by your raft for a new hook and later on a spear.
Why dont you play peaceful mode? That disables the shark attacking your raft.
You don't want to expand your raft too big the bigger the raft the more you have to watch out for, The shark shouldn't attack the raft when you are on a island also so don't be afraid to go farm stuff on islands, Especially Fruit/veg.
For the stones you can get them out the barrels so try hook the barrels when you see them.
Just be patient don't try to speed run it or push to fast, Once you have a better understanding of the game it should be a lot smoother.
im not trying to insult you but this is a skill issue. it took me a while before figuring out this game mostly because i was stubborn and refusing to learn. if you're in North America i'd be interested in starting a world with you.
I recommend playing on peaceful mode until you get the hang of things!
this game is super fun and can quickly get addicting in my experience.
I hope you can take some of the advice in this thread to have a better playing experience.
