I still think there's only one way to play these survival game : Hardest mode, otherwise there is no challenge . I made the habit of crafting a ''rescue'' box with food, water, weapons for friends ,because death can happen :) Also leather armour is a worthwhile item for solo exploring
Rarely people change their opinion.
I understand the reason why you need a friend to be rescued and I support the developers choice, despite that I played alone. I also went through a similar experience, where I almost asked on the forum for help. At that moment I also asked if there are backup saves, but I never used them.
Well it was designed to be hard to bypass so... Anyway, as far as I know the player state is saved separately from world state. I believe it's the RGD_Users.rgd file in the Player folder (it does seem to contain player inventory data). I've never tested it though so you have to find out yourself.
World states are saved in World folder. Each World has it's own folder and each backup has it's own folder inside of it. The one with the -Latest at the end is, well, the latest save of that particular world.
Blaming the game is simply not the solution, and Raft is FAR from the only survival type game that has penalties for dying. Resources are so easily obtained that losing a handful of tools is simply not that big a deal. Sure, there might be a few bugs that you can die to, been there done that, but seriously, suck it up. It's a survival game. The point is to survive. Be more careful, play smarter.
There's not a lot of survival games where you autosave on death. Minecraft does, but then again, you can run back to the site of your death and salvage your drops, sometimes even losing only the exp you earned while keeping the materials you dropped.
As for survival crafting games in general, in The Forest, you are transported to the native's cave lair, while in Grounded you drop your backpack. Picking up the backpack allows you to reclaim your lost items. In Dysmantle dying reverts back to an earlier save, so you can see what the general expectation is for these crafting survival games. Generally you either manually save or have the ability to salvage your losses. It's quite a problem because the combat in The Raft is particularly bad. It's actually more efficient to just dodge the buzzards instead of trying to kill them because of how long it will take.
AS for losing an hour of progress, its easily realized when you're either starting out, (limited access to materials since you're still using hook based salvage) or dying when carrying Titanium or when exploring bear island, like in my example when the game autosaved and crashed me as I was offering berries for the mother bear. My save was the berries were setup and the bear was already beside me eating them, instakilling me in the process.
I mean ffs there's a discord dedicated to rezzing yourself that pretty much tells you what 'play smart' is basically here is the thing we decided to do instead of just remove autosave on death, this is just as good, except you need another guy so its a lot clunkier.
Had to heavily mod it. Normal should not have forced ironman (cant load or save) and forced roguelite (you dont even leave a corpse)
But yes, forced ironman is when you cant save scum or simply load your previous save, lol.
Rogue lite? yeah, its rogue lite, a variation on the roguelike where you dont permanently lose your character (which happens in hard mode) but lose all progress = spawn with a new chracter. But since you keep world progress, its the lite variation, yeah.
But keep white knighting all you want XD
