A question about cooking with a bucket of milk
So I have used milk as an ingredient in the cooking pot, and the bucket was not returned to my inventory, which i kinda expected, but my question is, everywhere i read online says that as of chapter 2, the bucket should be returning to your inventory, and i can't seem to find anyone online saying that its still broken for them. Is it still bugged for everyone and nobody is talking about it anymore, or is it just me?

I believe hotfix 12.01 changed this.

"Can duplicate milk buckets via cookingpot" is listed under bug fixes. I took this to mean we would not be getting the buckets back anymore.

Oh, i did see that there was a bug where you placed the bucket as an ingredient and when you picked it back up, it gave it back along with an empty one at some point. Maybe their fix to that wasnt supposed to remove getting the bucket back from the cooking itself? I would hope so, since stews taste much worse with wood splinters in them lol.

Either way, you clarified that it is not just an issue with my game, so thank you for the response!

Yeah, not getting the milk bucket back makes those recipes SUPER EXPENSIVE and basically a waste. Where does all that wood go? I mean, I can understand the clay bowls getting consumed/ruined by putting soup in them, I mean, we're not expert potters, but having a whole wooden bucket get destroyed by pouring out the milk?

For now, it is better to just drink the milk - it gives you a little yellow food and some water - and then just milk the cow again, rather than spend all those planks each time you make a recipe with milk.

PS - I love the game, this is really just a minor nit.

That was where i ended up settling too. I think not getting the bucket back is unintended though, as if you look it up on the wiki it says that as of the last update, you get the bucket back after cooking with it. I think what happened was people discovered that glitch where you could just clone buckets all day, and so they reverted the whole bucket cooking business completely until they can get that dupe thing sorted out. That is my guess, anyway.

So is there really a point to getting goats then right now?

Realistically, id say no. I mean, you can drink the milk and it has a bit of a fullness effect in addition to what it does for your thirst, but if you don't already have a goat, i wouldn't say milk is so good its worth seeking one out.

I would just wait until they get the bucket cooking thing all worked out, assuming they plan to.
the game is really good,i just paly now.

you can still cook the pufferfish recipe which is really nice but im not sure its worth the extra work if you have the other recipe options more readily available. The cost is a bit high without getting a bucket back but its still easier than some of the other recipes so i wouldnt say milk is pointless.

The milk not stacking is another mark against it but the buckets themselves and the recipe do so its not a big problem later in the game. Since I keep my goat in the 1 block size pen along with a chicken it wasnt really any extra work so I wouldnt factor that in. its still free hydration when I need it at almost no cost and with 0 preparation. Although I do basically have infinite water with no effort by the time I caught a goat so ive never actually drank any.

Yeah, Bucket of Milk is a ridiculous waste of resources and makes the recipes that require it useless.

buckets are very cheap though. Im not even to the first island and have amassed a huge store of wood. Over a metal chest full.

It gives you essential iron and fiber in your diet, just like those healthy trace minerals from clay bowls.
Seriously though, I have planks and scrap and plastic and leaves/rope piling up and don't care about the buckets because nets get me the resources I need.
Those clay bowls on the other hand I have to actively work for.

Bucket only returns when you collect goat milk and drink it afterwards, If you use it as a cooking material for meal such as "Head Broth" it will not return the bucket.
