The release dev blog says 4 new playable characters (so up to total of 6):

Throughout the world you will be able to meet and unlock four new characters in order to play as them. Make sure to go back to previous destinations, as not all of them are found on the new ones! Thanks @BoSs_391 and @Anonymous Helper. Sounds like a group of new players would have to be a team of clones until they unlocked the other characters later. Not my thing, but thanks for the info!

Can you change characters mid-game or do you need one save to run around and unlock the one you want before you can play with the others?

Yikes. that's a no sale for me. I have enough things IRL trying to influence me on how what I should look like. Too bad, that's a big miss.
