Raft

The laziest achievement system ever
Beginner, intermediate, expert. Translation, we need to pad out our game with other tasks because the base game is too simplistic on its own, let’s have the players kill 50 of an animal that only spawns in one location and have a player gather 5000 materials using the tutorial tool.

I’ve had achievements that are difficult, and the problem with raft achievements is not their difficulty, but the amount of time it takes to complete them, and the reuse of the exact same achievement but with bigger numbers.

All the achievements in a Game like raft should be realistically doable in a single playthrough since the game is a linear story and there’s not exactly any replay value. While you can grab 5000 items with the base hook and kill 50 screechers in a single playthrough, realistically you won’t be doing that.

It’s no wonder that less than 1000 people including myself went through the trouble of 100%ing it, because it’s way too grindy and reused for most people to want to do

Subnautica had a fantastic achievement system, with all of the efforts coinciding with the main story apart from a few you would need to seek out, which is expected from an open survival game. Raft is very limited in exploration and has a very linear exploration system, which is fine for the game it is. But raft does not need 104 achievements for people to feel satisfied when it’s completed. I did 3 full playthroughs of raft, one of which was a co op, and my final achievement was just 6 hours of me picking up items with the hook. In that time I probably could have gotten a decent way through a fourth playthrough instead of getting that achievement. Subnautica only lacked a large margin of achievements on the same scale as raft, but gave up quantity for quality. What makes a good achievement system in my opinion is a mix of achievements acquired during the main intended gameplay (main story of a survive game, main bosses of a soulslike, etc) and extra achievements that are grindy but don’t feel impossible or incredibly tedious. Raft has an unbalanced mix of these achievements, with yes, plenty of story and exploration achievements that feel earned or grindy in a good way, but also suffers from a large margin of tedious objectives as well.

If your gonna add an objective to a game, your goal with it should usually making it worth the players time, not a tedious and annoying objective someone feels they need to do.

None of this is fact, just my opinion.

Nobody needs achievements.

I try to 100% most of my games and some are much more grindy than others, which I get. But raft tops them all as one of the worst designed systems I have ever seen.

Here’s how I’ll put it: halo infinite had 40 more achievements than raft and despite being a little more grindy it manages to be less infuriating than raft is. Granted halos achievements aren’t top notch, but at least there weren’t tiers of objectives, I’d be furious if I had to beat 50 brute chieftains on top of the 10 and 1 I would have had to fight if redbeet did that games achivements.

When it came to the grindy achievements, I used the save game/quit to main menu/load game exploit.

Hit a creature that you are trying to get the achievement for until it is one hit away from dying and then save the game, kill the creature, exit to main menu without saving, load the game, kill the creature and just keep repeating. I didn't do them all at once as that would have been too boring but I did use that method to increase my number of kills by 5 or 10 at a time.

Finding things like the paintings and tiki parts can be done the same way by saving after you find the buried treasure location and digging it up and seeing what you get, quit to main menu without saving and reload and only continue playing if you get something that you don't already have.

I currently have two achievements left to get. Painting 1,000 blocks (have over 700 left to do as I did very little painting in my early play throughs) and collecting 5,000 items (have 400-500 left to do). As I currently have two saves on the go (one regular 2D and one using the VR mod) I'll end up getting them before I finish those.

That’s what I had to do and it proves how stupid the system is, needing us to exploit to actually finish completing the game at a reasonable time.

Look raft is fun but it’s achviements ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ suck, that’s all I hoped to say with this post. I care about achievements because I am a completionist, and raft is by far one of the worst games I have 100%ed. we do 100%ing to ourselves (completionists) but most games we play don’t have the nerve to ask us to kill 50 of an enemy that spawns in TWO LOCATIONS and takes DAYS to respawn. It’s lazy, period.
