Start a game in creative mode and get a feel for how to make the basic things you need for your raft. The build menu will tell you what is needed. If you have the materials on you to craft the needed secondary material (ie: you have leaves and need to make rope for a building hammer) you can actually click on the rope in the recipe for the hammer and make said rope. This works for other items too.
But, as I said, I do recommend starting a game in creative mode and familiarizing yourself with the different recipes. Hope this helps.
You can make rope from palm leaves, they're everywhere.
You make rope from palm leaves.
If dieing to learn mechanics is so draining to your mental stamina, perhaps this is the wrong genre of game for you.
Try, Repeat, Succeed.
That is the way.
What I think is missing, it the/a story in the beginning. Nothing. THAT part should not be in the game.
