Raft

rant: the ending is very crap
not gonna lie i had high expectations for the ending when i first heard of temperance, i thought it was gonna be an ending like the forest where you can choose to somehow save the world from the flood or something (end your save file) or don't (continue your save file). but when i pulled up to utopia with my raft i was very disappointed, not only were there very annoying and downright unrealistic/pointless puzzles, the boss fight and the whole olof thing was very dumb. the developers quite literally decided to slap a pointless character from the notes with a bunch of hyenas and crates into some rooms and called it a day, then gave you some free food after a boss fight with a over sized hyena. honestly i was expecting raft to have more of an actual ending, and quite frankly the current ending seems like an ending to a side mission.

I agree completly. After the first "puzzle" the feeling of the game left. What was left was parkour (for some reason), hyenas (like wth), bombs and a "main" boss that wasnt even killable (that if something pissed me off).

I thought I had pretty low expectations for the ending and I was still disappointed! I figured since the game was based around finding resources and crafting, we'd have to craft some special machine that would help save the last people, or something like that.

But no, instead they re-write the story so it includes a super generic villain and then the ending is a super generic boss fight. So lame. The combat in the game was always really bad, so adding more of it in the final level was a terrible idea.

Also I have to say, that last level was really ugly. I thought Caravan Town and Tangaroa had such a cool look to them. But when I got to Utopia it was like their good level designer quit and they just slapped together some bamboo and skyscrapers and called it a day.

Thank you, you speak my mind. It felt as if the money and the ideas were no longer enough.

Utopia was my fave. I hated Temperance tho. I sorta see what people mean when they say the puzzles at utopia were more "generic" than the others but then again, all the puzzles are like that once you start noticing.

It's only a difference of degree. For all of them, you're going from one place to another and you must solve a puzzle if you want to get to the next place.

The ending was indeed disappointing.

They re-wrote many of the notes for the earlier locations, starting with the radio tower, Vasagatan, etc, and Olof's character was completely changed from a seemingly well-intentioned but incompetent politician to a warlord-mad scientist-super-villain.

But when I saw all the crap the rafters had done to Utopia by adding all those spinning obstacles I had to get through, I was actually in agreement with Olof that the damned rafters deserved to be locked up... I was sorely tempted to leave them there to rot.

I found all three new areas to be very... empty. There was so much space and not a lot to do with it, so you ended up lost most of the time hoping to stumble upon something. Getting titanium tools right at the end was also a let down. I have these things now, but what is the point? I've done it all. Yay, I can kill a warthog or bear slightly faster now...

Game needs something. I wouldn't mind a new game plus where you start over, but retain your current raft/recipes or something. SOMETHING!

Noone mentioned the acid spitting hyena, why would a hyena drop an acid pool when you hit it? Why did Olof have an endless supply of hyenas in one area?

Y'all just spoiled from games like Skyrim or Fallout. Endings can come in many shapes and colors. Raft's is just a simple happy ending. No strings attached, no loose ends. After the story is done, you get to explore freely, not worrying about the villain destroying more places. Other games with content-filled endgame sections don't really appeal to everybody, and Raft does a great job at appealing to those who like to just... explore. I mean, Minecraft doesn't have a definite end-game, but do you see people complain about it? No. So, just accept that other people like this type of endings instead of yelling at the devs for not writing a story YOU like.

With regards to emptiness. Balboa was pretty bad too....like pointlessly large and hard to navigate, just for the sake of "padding", coupled with stupid spawn rates on the bears.

In terms of new game plus, you might be able to find a mod that would essentially do the same thing.

them re-writing the notes was honestly stupid, like they build up story behind detto and bruno, etc. but then at the very last destination they slap in olof and barely anything about detto besides his little shack and absolutely nothing about bruno. what's the point of using different islands to build up 2 characters just to put a very under-developed psychotic general as the main star for the ending

I have a bunch of issues with the game and the ending is definitely a big point for me. The whole city of Utopia is a joke as it's just a bunch of crappy wooden and bamboo buildings that are, for some stupid reason, all held up like spider-man came to visit. The moment one of those skyscrapers buckles or starts to sway from a storm or the wind the whole place is going to come crashing down. It's such a stupid idea of "Utopia", even more so since the game already has the best answer to that already, Tangaroa.

also, they could have just lived in the buildings, and not have built off of them though i understand the farm area being a raft and some little huts and shacks outside of the entrances of the buildings, but why the heck do you need to build giant wooden structures off of the buildings..
distantlight Jun 29, 2022 @ 10:27am
Yeah that's the problem I have; Tangaroa looked like what I expected the final level to be.

When I first started playing the game, I was getting an eerie "last person on earth" vibe from it. And I was thinking, that might be a unique way to end the game: you go to the final area... and all the people are actually gone. You are actually the last person alive. But it's not that bad, because you've learned how to build all this stuff and survive on your own, and you can keep sailing indefinitely, and hey - maybe someday you will find someone else?

I know, I know, that's probably way too dark for most people, but I think it would've been a lot more memorable than having a cartoonish supervillain and his pet hyena at the end.

When 1.0 came out, they kinda ruined that whole vibe anyway, because they added the trading posts and put in a couple of NPCs you meet before the ending. Feels like a missed opportunity to me, but I guess I understand why they did it the way they did.

I thought it was fine. I wanted to play as Olaf though so in that regard im a little disappointed. On a side note, the hyena fight is a good spot to farm tons of leather and meat which is great.

I like the story where there's thousands of people out there floating on rafts better than a last person on earth idea. Gives waterworld vibes.
