Best way to maintain Bio-Fuel?
Just struggling a bit with Bio-fuel and creating it. Currently I use shark meat and I have 2 bee farms. But I still can't keep up with only 2 engines using Bio-Fuel. Can anybody help?

Edit: Thankyou everyone for your help! I didn't realize how many hives you needed! I also had no idea animal heads worked, I have about a chest full of heads so this will help lots!

More bee farms and you can use any raw food item not just shark, you can also use heads from shark and any other head you can collect.

You need way more bee farms. I normally have 10 bees surrounded by flower plots for max production of honeycomb.

As for the biofuel I use animal heads and when I am out I will use goat milk and clucker eggs but any food item will work.

I have 15 beehives and 10 cluckers. 7 eggs fill an old school tank. I have watermelons and potatoes as backup. I still need more cluckers and 5 more beehives

If you need to you can just drift for a while instead of using engines. Point yourself in the direction the wind is blowing, lower your sail and just drift. The wind will eventually carry you to islands. Fish, honey and sharks are effectively infinite so start stockpiling biofuel while drifting.

Watermelons, eggs, and milk are surprisingly powerful fuel producers. I favor watermelons just because I find harvesting animals to be too annoying to keep more than I need, so I'm always low on eggs and just ditched the goat entirely.

5 hive on 12 flower with melons supports 3 engines no problem

Thankyou!

and you dont really need engines for anything except getting to balboa.
and you "almost" dont need them for that.
I can get to balboa on sail and 2 paddles.

Keep bee farms onboard and have a healthy supply of glass for the honey half, and you can use pretty much any raw food item for the "food" half. I've found myself using eggs and watermelons as the best "easy" fodder for the refiners, but any non-unique animal head (bears, warthogs, hyenas, polar bears, sharks, poison-puffers) all work gangbusters for the "raw material" half. If you have a glut of red berries you're not using for the juicer or food items, those work great too.

Also, build fuel tanks and fuel pipes ASAP. Those give you a considerably longer runtime overall and provide for easier management.

Use animal heads. Puffer heads have highest yield.

That or get a nice 4-6 plot of watermelons.

If you are struggling I remember that catching a chicken is a great way to fill up refiner. You pop 5 eggs (60/400 each)and it gives you 300/400 capacity of refiner. The fruits give you 40 (watermelon is great, because it gives you 2x40, so it's 80.
I remember playing last year was like 5 egss, watermelon and 2 potatoes or beets and refiner was full. The honey, I get 5 bee hives and it felt like I can never run out of biofuel really. I had 8 refiners working all the time and chest full of biofuel. But the heads are the best. Especially pufferfish head.

You can also place small gardening plots with potatoes and beets near 1 sprinkler that will water them all. I remember I harvested like 2,5 stacks of vegetables doing so. Not very efficient but it worked great as a filler for the refiner (because 1 potato and beet gives 10/400)

I don't use my engines unless I need to, so my tank is pretty much always full, until you get the bigger refinery you will do a bit of running back and forth.

As mentioned above, heads provide the most value in bio-fuel. https://raft.fandom.com/wiki/Biofuel_Refiner#Raw_Foods

I would also go ahead and make an enclosed honey farm, they have the optimal layout to get 3 per hive. https://raft.fandom.com/wiki/Beehive?file=Beehives_Honeycomb_Farm.png

Birds will go after your flowers so thats why it needs to be enclosed with nothing build on the roof.

4 hives and eggs from 5-6 cluckers is all ive used my entire playthrough and it produces more than enough for 2-3 engines for me, never been out of fuel once. granted at first you have to be super vigilant when the hives are active until you get the advanced scarecrow, then you never need to worry about birds eating your plants and the hives just freely produce. only other worry is gathering sand, which is more than plentiful enough as you should normally be clearing out the reefs when you stop at any island anyway.

I almost exclusively used eggs to make my bio fuel.
5-6 cluckers.
10 Beehives
4 Biofuel refiners
You can probably get away with less if you stay more on top of production than I did.
Now I'm using two of the new refiners piped directly into my fuel system, but with the items above I was maintaining 6 fuel tanks and saved 2.75 wooden chests of fuel.
But best way to save fuel is to only use your engines when you need to. Just drift or use the sail otherwise.

Get the scarecrow from the trade stations, it completely protects crops, makes fuel and food so much easier.
