I just got killed 3 times in a row by a bird dropping stones on me, Running away did not make a difference.

Don't run in a straight line. They give an audio cue when they are going to drop the stone, that's when you should change directions or move to the side if you are standing still.
Once you are proficient with the bow you can take them out with a few passes. They seem to have much less health now. Have to shoot them then hope to the side, repeat.

They're not too bad if you keep moving and stay aware. What's really annoying is when they follow you back to the raft and tag you a few more times for good measure. :(

Welcome to everybodies favorite enemy, the screecher.

You can actually avoid their hits but its kinda tricky out in the open, the best way to deal with them is to lure them to your raft and have a roof over your head (carefull there is some splash damage some ppl reported, I never had that), then from that secure position watch the bird fly back to the island to grab a new rock (he gotta do that for each attack), and when he comes flying again you have a wonderfull target, flying in a straight line at you.

THere's a shockwave effect that it shows for where the splash hits. Unfortunately, there are multiple people, including me, who have been hit while underwater and while beneath roofs. Likely a bug and one that has likely been reported already.

Main thing is to keep aware of the P.I.T.A. and either dash forward from a standing position, or if already moving then you gotta move to the side in a timely fashion. If you aim correctly, and lead with the right timing, you can get up to two or arrows into the Screecher per Fly-by roc'ing.

Best way I've found; is to scope where it's coming from, and then as it fly's towards you, you simply run under it and the rock drops behind you.

If you time it right, you can even squeeze off a shot from your bow and hit it before you move.

if you are under a roof that is JUST above your head you will be hit because the dropped rock has an AOE diameter of 1(or a radius of a half pole).
add a HALF pole of height to the roof and you will no longer be hit.

what kills me is when im looking through the trader stuff and i domed because nobody thought to put a fkn roof in front of the trader.

you can crouch jump onto the counter and hide inside of it. if you stay crouched while shopping, the dropped stones won't hit you.

But to answer the threads topic: i just keep running straight towards them and loose an arrow about 2m ahead of their head, when they're about to drop their load. works almost every time.

I got pretty good at aiming with metal arrows about 1 inch, real , ahead of the flight path of the bird but that was a long while ago.
So now I restarted again 'cause I like the building part.

However, restarting the game anf coming up against that magnificent bird I couldn't hit it for quids???
I had found if I go to a raised spot then when the bird is close, shoot root and leave, ha ha no kidding, shoot and run forward to drop off the rock i was on and he missed me most of the time.
But But,
I couldn't run forward fast enough and then I discovered my walk run mode was in toggle mode so once un ticked, then all good.
So maybe you have this problem, check the setting

I use a bow and stand in place while watching them come at me. Just before they get to me, I lead them just a little and shoot the arrow. As the arrow hits, I sprint forward allowing the rock to miss. Takes a little bit to get the timing down, but once you do, it becomes easy. Each island now gives me food and a head for my biofuel generator…. And I don’t have to worry about them anymore.

When I hear the screech, quick run to the right or left in a circle- not straight.
There's a great UTub tutorial on avoiding and shooting the Screechers. I will add link if I find it.
