Two, a few story locations forward you'll find notes signed by "Grabber". The name doesn't bear relevance from my perspective, but the notes do. You'll get a better picture once you finish that whole site, but if you didn't, we can discuss then :).
Just keep looking it all over until you find everything you can. If you get truly lost, there's always a youtube guide to help you find that one missing piece.
Ok, so this next will just be full on with the spoilers. Fair warning.

The scarecrows you find ARE the kids. There was never more than two, real, people on that island. A pair of park rangers that also happened to be siblings.
The people meant to relieve them of duty as listed on the schedule never showed up, giving us a vague time frame of when society finally fell apart.
At some point the sister disappeared. Unknown if she made a raft and left without telling the brother, or just got eaten by a bear. Based on what we read in the notes, my moneys on the second one.
In either case this left the brother alone. If you know anything about the human psyche, this almost never ends well.
Three months later and he's hearing voices.
All those notes written by the kids? Again, there's only one person on that island.
Good news at least, this does mean that no one was (actually) murdered.
