There is mild, non graphic violence. That's about it currently. Just be aware that game being in Early Access means anything and everything is subject to change.
The "worst" thing for a child in this game is the first time the shark goes for a piece of your raft, that could be mildly jump-scary for a small child i'd imagine. Technically poking the shark and/or hitting it with arrows can be considered... well... poking a shark with a spear and/or hitting it with arrows (i am grasping at straws here). I bet most 8 years old have seen/done waaaaaaaaay worse than that.
I would suggest parental/adult supervision if the kid is going to have or join people in Raft for community or group Raft parties. Initial supervision as some kids might not have a positive reaction to the pace of the survival learning curve. Even with a good Raft guide to have some idea of what skills are needed at what point, there is still a learning curve.
Raft's premise so far is survival. Normal and Hard is definitely hectic for survival. Hard is a constant hectic mode. Normal can reach a point where the player (solo) can sustain themselves very well.
The most violence so far is killing animals for resources. Very little blood, besides the little bit of splash graphics when attacked by the shark.
In the end, it will be something of a personal judgement to the skill level and age consideration. Like I wouldn't expect a three year old to have the skill to play on normal or hard mode.
My youngest son was 8 years old when I bought this for my family, we all played and had a lot of fun. I could clearly see the shark attack he fought the same way he plays the hippo/frog smasher at the arcade. The cartoons for kids are way worse than this game ever was.
My youngest is now 9 and we're looking at having another go with the update that's about to release and I can see there will definitely be a bit more violence with the rats and bears but as a team I think we can look after one another just fine.
