Personally, I feel like the ONLY reason I'd not recommend the game is just it kinda feels dead, there's not really that much content and whiles content is surely on the way, and until said patch drops, you could very quickly finish the game and it's story and well, yes it's an endless sandbox but you've practically visited every island since there aren't many different.

But it's still a decent game with at least a decent amount of people in the community it seems too.
The single player is very fun, same with multiplayer, but that one is just the same as Single player just, well you gotta feed more people but you get people helping around the raft.
I enjoy playing singleplayer on my own raft, even if I started to use mods to kinda add a little more to the game.

There aren't any NPCs. Excluding the animals who'll either attack you or are the domesticated animals you can get stuff from if you provide grass.

Single Player is just as fun as multiplayer. If anything, its more challenging currently because you do not have other people helping you gather resources. It gives the game a lot more play time since it is still currently being completed.

I play sp and never feel lonely. There is Mr shark who is always ready to open his mouth, and then you have the whales, turtles and dolphins swimming about, plus birdy's. They are all much better company then horrible people.
May I recommend raftmodding.com. This will allow you to mod some of the more annoying parts of the game, making the annoying pleasurable.

I am a single player and play in peaceful. It is very doable and a whole lot of fun. If you enjoy exploring like I do, I definitely recommend single player in peaceful mode. Single player in normal is a bit too hectic, especially at first, too many things to concentrate on. In peaceful there is still tons to do, and I heartily recommend the game to single players in the peaceful mode.

Before I would say yes, but the very long wait for content is kinda killing the mood.
