But I get what you're saying. They aren't as useful as they could be.
Perhaps they will improve them in the future.
Zooming in on a blurry island silhouette at the edge of your draw distance does not show any more detail, it just makes the blurry island silhouette larger on your screen. Maybe useful if you play on a TV and sit 15-20 feet away on the couch, but not 2-3 feet away from a monitor... It's like a digital zoom on a phone camera instead of a real optical zoom on a professional camera (or, you know, actual binoculars).
I agree with OP, I was very disappointed the first time I crafted the item and then never bothered using it again.
But nevertheless, actual binoculars do not remove fog or blur from an object. (Only when they are used in a Hollywood movie)
I'm really happy to see people agreeing with this.
