You very quickly realize that all the threats make the game annoying rather than challenging. That's when you restart in peaceful mode.

yes there's a mod that makes any animal passive if you wear the head of one. you can also fortify your raft edge, that stops the shark mostly. pretty sure he takes one square every few hours

You have to fortify all of your raft base because the shark will attack in the middle if only the edge is fortified. Once my friend and I did this in our game, the shark is of no concern. If we want to dive where the shark might want to attack we use the bait to kill it first.

That has not been my experience, just fortifying the edge works for me.

If there is a big enough hole in the raft, the shark might attack the inner edge. Not shure about the needed size of the hole.

6 engines make any size raft go at max speed.

Define "permanently" and "get rid of"
You can't have the shark go away forever, but if you armor the outside edges of the raft he only is a threat when you go swimming.

Who would want to get rid of poor Bruce? Can't cook shark stew without good ol' Bruce!

I've done a bit of googling, and you are right, it was changed, when the second chapter was released. But it did used to be you have to reinforce the whole raft.

Taking care of the shark is pretty easy once you get the hang of it. With the bow and arrow in hand ( 10 or 12 arrows if you don't miss ) jump in the water and when he comes at you time your shot as he opens his mouth to attack, this will stop the attack and give you time to regroup and wait for him to come again. Mind your air and stay close to the raft if you need to escape.

You dont need to fortify all of your raft. Only the first line since some Patches.

I build whats called a starting T in the game. Its 11 foundations on each side with catch nets for all the junk floating around. Then you build in the middle a long line of foundations making a huge T. Since the shark circles your raft, you can make it go as far as you want. I usually have it at 80+ foundations and i can freely explore islands while its stuck at the end of my raft exploring.

I usually anchor my raft as soon as i see an island so i can swim out to it and not be detected by the shark while its taking 10 minutes just to circle my raft once. I now have the ability to gather island materials unbothered and a huge resource collector to build my main raft.

Just remember how hard it is to delete 80+ foundations when you got your dream raft

Yep my current safefile still has everything reinforced for that exact reason.
