farming in RAFT is really easy when you come across the islands frequently
Scrap is best to farm in the water around the islands, but wood I think is easiest to just sail full into the wind and put out as many nets as you can... then just sit back and harvest.

To my surprise, I still have more space than I need to function with! The first floor is pretty bare, except for a 2 by 2 growing room packed with 15 small planter boxes, the stationary anchor, and you can see the mill and the storage box blocking the view of the water purifier that is right behind it.
On the second floor, you can see my 'vacant' room on the right for anyone else that comes by, and the kitchen table through the other window on the left. The other two corner rooms are the smelting room with 5 smelters (back left), and my own room with misc things and hammock (back right). Under the sail platform is room for 54 chests (can only see two from this angle), so I'm good for storage for awhile.
I didn't realize the angle blocked the view of the ladders, but there is a way to get up and down all floors. Ladders are in each quarter of the raft and go all the way from the top to the bottom, making jumping down and stabbing a shark more than doable. The raft isn't too big to defend solo, even without the armor.
While the corners might block line of sight some, the sail platform has quite the commanding view. You can see what is almost right in front of you pretty well when not going corner-wise over the sea. Even if you do for whatever reason (there is a sail to fix that), you still can see stuff left and right pretty well.
I put the empty room up, because I wanted to keep symmetry, and soon after I put this sign up as a joke.

However, if a friend does join, there would be a nice space for them. It's empty right now, but there is more than enough materials to make pretty much whatever is desired. The only thing I'm lacking is a couple more rare findables via fishing.
As you can guess, this raft is built for function. It isn't going to collect everything you run across (it isn't wide enough), nor is it close to being one of those titanic luxury rafts; but it doesn't matter which way you drift, the "+" shaped nets in the center will always collect, and it will never lag out your PC. At most I dip a tad bellow 60 FPS when anchored and near an island. (got a Core i7 6th gen, and GTX 1080, for reference).

Nothing fancy, just functional and well kept.
Higher deck work area, basement rooms for crops, area for visitors and seagulls on top.
It appears you have never heard of creative mode.

I rebuilt my raft over the weekend. This is an 11x11 size with 3 floors. Got most of the crafting stuff on the 2nd level and still tons of space for new content. I fortified the edges and the important middle stuff so should be in good shape depending on what new items show up in the future.
EDIT: Tonight I added 4th level boarding ramps around the top. Helps with those really tall islands.
