How do I change the dang blocks?

I can't find anyone putting an actual how-to, only the little patch intro video. It says we can change the wood to a different type without breaking it, but I cannot figure out how!

It's the bottom choice on your hammer menu.

Switch to your building hammer, in its menu, last row first option is the upgrade / replace ability as long you have the necessary materials.

For example if you ought to upgrade simple foundation to solid foundation, you will still need 3 planks and 3 plastics to upgrade / replace (same as replace an entirely new one), but you get immediate refund when upgrade / replace for excess materials.

Also later in game fortify your raft, and you only need to do the border of the raft, however big it is. Shark will not be able chew border once fortified and inner part is always protected by border.

Oh did they fix the thing where the shark would come and chew inner raft bits? I fortified my whole bottom back then

you only need to fortify border now, inner part is protected by border tile.

Later in game if you just have lots metal ores + scraps (for nails) sitting around doesn't hurt to fortify inner as well to give the foundation tiles a bit "metallic" feel.
