As for the loss of flowing debris, can't say i have ever encountered it in all my hours, but occasionally seen posts about them, had always believed those to be system or settings related.
Have you tried full exit of game, and relogin.
Place a streamer in order to see the way the wind is blowing and then a sail in order to adjust your raft's direction.
Always go with the wind in order to find resources.
@OP my guess would be that the debris field is coming from a different direction now.
Also any chance you have a sail pointing opposite the wind direction ? Or and anchor down ?
Once you get to the steering wheel you can rotate your raft easily. Before that you can rotate your raft by bumping your raft next to an island and with the help of a paddle rotating it.
You can have your sail in the opposite direction and stay still or move very slowly. This is what I meant to say.
can still rely on fine tuning your sail sideways, diagonally to catch the flow, to get closer and mingle with some of the incoming debris,
'if' you even know about the crafted Streamer and knowledge of the Wind.
Go with the flow, find another floating wreck or island quick to collide into, adjust your orientation with paddle during the bump.
Assumed you are rather fresh in your current raft based on your achievements, would restarting be a better option.
Does not take long for one to find barrels, build sail, receiver, and head to the 1st Radio Tower location.
That is per game design. Get to the Vasagatan sotry location and you will find the steering wheel blueprints. Without the steering wheel it is still possible to rotate your raft but it involves hitting one corner of it against and island/rock and using paddle. It is tricky but doable. Also as Has mentioned above - use streamer(s) to figure out your direction.
P.S. if you ever see a floating raft comming at you - drop anchor, swim to it and sink it by stepping on it.
