If you have enough engines 1 engine per 100 blocks of foundation. You should not be having any problems.
It sounds to me like your sail is blowing into the wind (which happens to be backwards) and your 1 Engine isnt sufficient to power your raft. That or the lever on the engine is pushing you the opposite direction.
if you have the engine, you should have also picked up the steering wheel blueprint, build one and use it to turn back in the correct direction. if you don't have the steering wheel you can turn by carefully planning a collision to the side of your raft with a small island or an abandoned raft.
How big is your raft? Do you have enough engines? Do they have fuel (wood or bio-fuel)?
You raft always try to go in one direction (regardless if the raft did turn or not). You can know this direction using a streamer (red flag) : the end of the flag show where your raft try to go (or where the current push it, if you will).
If you add a sail, you can change the direction your raft go up to some point. It's not strong enough to cancel the basic always present movement your raft have, so you cannot go "back" using a sail only, it slow down the raft a lot a best.
If you use a paddle, you move your raft by yourself in the direction you want - eventually if you combine sail + paddle that's enough to move back, but it's extremely slow to do so, but can be used in case you get stuck.
If you use enough engine (the sound and how it looks change if there is enough) you can force your raft to go in either direction your engine is set regardless of the paddle, sail, and basic movement. So you cna eventually go back with an engine.
(reminder : "back" refer to the opposite direction of the basic forward movement your raft have when you start the game, that is alwyas here)
You just need to make sure they are all setup in the same direction, all have fuel (like plank).
Last thing. The trash alwyas spawn further away of your raft, so their spawn is based on your current movement. If you keep turning your raft you won't get them.
Example : Streamer point back of your raft. Then your raft did a 180° rotation, hit an island or use a steering wheel to correct the rotation if you want to.
Example : I am going backward. Well first off what you think as "backward" maybe isn't. Backward would be based on the natural movement your raft go and isn't related to the rotation of your raft or anything else. Turn your raft, use a streamer.
Also. The radar give you some information about the direction of the island around you. The radar itself is the middle dot, and the island are the other dot. That being say, the direction it tell you is based on his own position, so if you turn the raft, the dot will "turn" around you too. Any of that doesn't have to do anything with the basic forward movement your raft have, so try to not get confused when you use the receiver screen.
TL;DR
Place a streamer.
Place a steering wheel.
Turn your raft untill the streamer flag point in front of your raft.
Now you are back in your original direction ,same as when you started the game.
