If this has changed (meaning the behaviour is *working as intended*), then the waterer will reach one grassplot less now, which means (depending on the design of the animal pens) a potentially drastic change in the layout of maybe the whole raft (if you, like me, try to squeeze something "functional" in every nook and cranny of a deck... ^^)...
I highly hope, this is a bug and not a 'new' feature!
Regards, Kerulon
So having it water grass an animal cant eat is kinda redundant, and basically doesn't change the behavior of the item. The only thing it effects is your cosmetic sense of having all grass in the room.
I have a sprinkler placed from update-11 and they ate the grass from it today (update 12)...

Wow...I've never actually been called a liar before in a steam forum. I almost feel honored. You might wanna check your facts before you start throwing that sorta thing around...
I'm preparing a bug thread for that topic, if i happen to experience it with update-12.
The issue is, that my big reddish Llamas will target a grown grass plot behind a rope fence (==unreachable, at least for them) and *won't budge* until they die of starvation!
The first time i was watching it (saved my world beforehand ^^) to check if it would really starve, the LLama was *saved* by a red clucker who ate the plot through the fence.
As this was now not a grown grass plot anymore, the *looking for food* algorithm must have detected that and chose another (accessible) plot and the LLama was happy again...
Until yesterday this happened 6 times so far and on 2 occasions i only heard the death sound of a starved big red/orangeish Llama (as this is definitely a bug (there was grown grass aplenty!), i consequently reloaded a prior save)...
It never happened to goats/cluckers or the normal Llama i have (i didn't find a striped big Llama yet).
Regards, Kerulon
EDIT: the word is algorithm, not algorYthm ^^
Nothing about my comment was an attack on you or your information.
I asked are you sure, as in have you actually seen this happen. Also gave you my experience, which is by no means the way of things.
Eat a snickers, drink some coffee and get back to us when youre not in such a combative mood.
As far as i remember the plot under the sprinkler is eaten by animals, or at least by McClucksky, my handsome chicken turkey thingamabob...
Also, I'm leaning towards bug, because there is an actual picture on the side of the sprinkler with a 3x3 grid of plots with the sprinkler in the middle of a row of 3.
I wanna redisine my Raft for little bit, and was playing in the Creative mode, and noticed, what i can't place my sprinkler on a grass anymore. However, on my original save my Sprinklers are placed on top of the grass, and my animals has no problem to eat that grass.
Very annoing.
If this is an intended change it would have made more sense to me if the sprinkler sat outside the 3x3 area & watered the 3x3 squares in front of it.
